The Path to Awareness
This movie (from a play) is a believable slice of life and an examination of American masculinity and the way it twists life for the men caught up in it as well as the women who suffer for it. Nevertheless, it reveals the redeeming power of love, compassion, and self-realization. Despite its gritty revelations of a world we are not all aware of, it retains a way out of the dysfunctional trap that patriarchy inflicts on all of us. It might be a stretch to say that it evokes Buddhist philosophy and psychology, but it seems to swim in and out of western and Buddhist tenants but ultimately ends (and at the same time begins) the path to mindfulness, forgiveness, and the realization that we are here to awaken from the illusion of our separateness. There is no sugar-coating of the fact that the path to being awakened is a painful one but worth the joy.
