Not Perfect, but Still a Gem
Del Amitri is one of those bands whose first album sounded nothing at all like anything they did later that is much better-known. This is not at all the accessible pop rock like “Roll to Me” or “Not Where it’s At”, although the high standard of excellent song-writing is still a stand-out feature, if a bit more abstract. This 1985 album captures the band when they were very underground and sounded like a mix of The Smiths, Talkingheads, and Up On the Sun-era Meat Puppets. Frenetic layers of acoustic and jangly electric guitar mix with a post-punk beat and the kind of almost paranoid, angular singing that made artists like David Byrne and Midnight Oil stylish at the time. And the lyrics are deliciously cryptic and obtuse, but with an obvious point to make— it’s just left to the listener to figure out what that is! The album’s main weakness is that it tends to all sound the same by the time you get to the last song, and so it’s obvious as to why the group made a total shift in style by the time of their next album— an indie-pop approach in which they could express themselves with much more variety and feeling. Yet, still, Del Amitri’s debut is a beautiful, intricate, rootsy work that seems to have taken as many queues from the 70s art rock movement as the 80s post-punk/new wave scene. As such, it’s completely unique and well-worth a listen for anyone enamored with rock music’s more esoteric side.
