Reviews
The Kilroys exemplify the power of grassroots action - of communion based in savvy know-how and commitment effecting positive change with radical joy., When I look at the list of women and nonbinary writers included in this volume, many of whom I have mentored or taught, it is a beautiful reminder that we are a community to be reckoned with, and that there is an abundance of vital narratives awaiting a larger audience. While there remains a great deal of work to be done to reach racial and gender equity in the theater, the powerful and provocative writing presented here is part of the inciting incident that will no doubt shake up the status quo., This is a historic compilation of fervent, fierce and formidable voices, who have been left on the margins for far too long, but who now, with the caliber of their writing, stake claim to what it means to be an American Playwright, in this time and place., While there remains a great deal of work to be done to reach racial and gender equity in the theater, the powerful and provocative writing presented here is part of the inciting incident that will no doubt shake up the status quo. It also is the culmination of the heroic efforts of the Kilroy collective, to advocate and agitate for more representation of cis-women and trans writers on the American stage., Too often women and trans writers get overlooked and underproduced, and this anthology is just one way we're hoping to change this. These monologues show a fraction of the underrepresented and underserved voices in the American theater. Read these monologues, support these playwrights' careers and productions--and help make our homogeneous playing field look a little more like our America.
Synopsis
A new collection of monologues or scenes from plays written by women, trans, and nonbinary writers, nominated by hundreds of professional artistic directors, literary managers, professors, directors, and dramaturgs., 'When I look at the list of women and nonbinary writers included in this volume, many of whom I have mentored or taught, it is a beautiful reminder that we are a community to be reckoned with, and that there is an abundance of vital narratives awaiting a larger audience. While there remains a great deal of work to be done to reach racial and gender equity in the theater, the powerful and provocative writing presented here is part of the inciting incident that will no doubt shake up the status quo.' Lynn Nottage, from her Foreword The Kilroys are a gang of playwrights and producers who came together in Los Angeles in 2013 to stop talking about gender parity in theatre and start taking action. In 2014, they released their first annual List: a vetted collection of plays written by women, trans, and nonbinary writers, nominated by hundreds of professional artistic directors, literary managers, professors, directors, and dramaturgs. This collection includes a monologue or scene from each play from the 2016 and 2017 editions of The List. 'This is a historic compilation of fervent, fierce, and formidable voices, who have been left on the margins for far too long, but who now, with the caliber of their writing, stake claim to what it means to be an American playwright, in this time and place.' Tanya Saracho 'Too often women and trans writers get overlooked and underproduced, and this anthology is just one way we're hoping to change this. These monologues show a fraction of the underrepresented and underserved voices in the American theater. Read these monologues, support these playwrights' careers and productions--and help make our homogeneous playing field look a little more like our America.' Zakiyyah Alexander, The Kilroys are back with a new collection of 67 monologues and scenes by female and trans playwrights. The second volume includes a monologue or scene from each play from the 2016 version of The List (featuring plays that were unproduced at the time of nomination) and the 2017 version of The List (featuring plays by playwrights of color). This collection represents an abundance of excellent new work by female and trans playwrights and reflects a wide ethnic, geographic, and aesthetic diversity. The volume also includes a foreword by Lynn Nottage., The Kilroys: "We Make Trouble. And Plays." "When I look at the list of women and nonbinary writers included in this volume, many of whom I have mentored or taught, it is a beautiful reminder that we are a community to be reckoned with, and that there is an abundance of vital narratives awaiting a larger audience. While there remains a great deal of work to be done to reach racial and gender equity in the theater, the powerful and provocative writing presented here is part of the inciting incident that will no doubt shake up the status quo." --Lynn Nottage, from her Foreword The Kilroys are back with a new collection of 67 monologues and scenes by women and nonbinary playwrights. This collection includes a monologue or scene from each play from the 2016 and 2017 editions of The List., A collection of monologues and scenes from contemporary plays written by female and trans authors. The Kilroys' objective is to end the underrepresentation of female and trans playwrights in American Theaterrete. The group advocates for more visibility of underrepresented playwrights. The List is meant to be used as a tool for producers who are committed to ending the systemic underrepresentation of female and trans playwrights in the American theater. The plays on the list are nominated by influential new play leaders -- Artistic Directors, Literary Managers, Professors, Producers, Directors, and Dramaturgs --with the most recommended plays earning a place on the list. Eligibility requirements for the 2016 and 2017 Lists: Unproduced or have only a single professional production Written by a playwright who identifies as a female or trans writer (the 2017 list is also exclusively writers of color) Be among the most excellent plays read or seen by industry professionals in the past 12 months Not included on any of the previous Lists Founded in 2013, The Kilroys was created by a group of playwrights and producers in LA. The namesake "The Kilroys" originated from the World War II graffiti tag "Kilroy Was Here" The tagline used by The Kilroys is " We Make Trouble and Plays."
