An anime classic, back on video after a prolonged absence. First in the MADHOUSE tradition that includes NINJA SCROLL, BIOHUNTER, and VAMPIRE HUNTER D, this is a supernatural thriller that is fairly graphic and more than a little disturbing. In it, the inhabitants of Earth have come into contact with the Black World, a parallel universe inhabited by incredibly intelligent and mysterious beings. The two worlds have lived in peace brokered by a weak treaty for the last 500 years, which is due to be renegotiated. Two guards, one human, one from the Black World, are assigned to keep the Earth's delegate safe from Black Worlders who would like to see the Earth taken over.

    It could have been so much more...

    Like many anime movies and series, this fizzled out at the end to an unsatisfactory conclusion which brought the rest of the movie down. It has an edgy, gory, graphic and original story, with interesting characters and villains, but it does not follow through on what is set up by these elements. The animation is beautiful hand-drawn style, but we mostly know the two main characters will get together in the end, and in the end, the villain is not that challenging or frightening. Something to borrow and watch one time, but not to purchase.

    One of the best anime movies

    It's really the voice work, especially of the lead actor, that sells the story. Especially with the fantastical plot. Action sequences are well designed. The plot moves along briskly.

    Gory addition to your anime library

    This movie is an 80's classic for sure, full of sex, gore and over the top violence. If you're into horror/scifi anime, pick this one up.
