Reviews
--starred review, Publishers Weekly Life in a small town in the rugged, lush and soaring Trinity Mountains of Northern California is the canvas for these breathtaking short stories....Parvin's stories possess a lyrical, mesmerizing quality, hypnotizing in its sweeter moments, haunting when bitter. But the delicately spun prose never takes away from the fact that these are stories about everyday people on the rough edge of civilized life. Parvin's characters confront head-on the deaths of loved ones, the destruction of dreams, and continue on with their lives as best they can....Whether offering salvation or searing pain, Parvin captures real life in these fleeting pages: an unforgettable collection, an awe-inspiring debut. --Library Journal, February 1997 Parvin relies on a rare form of storytelling in his debut: All the stories revolve around a small town in the Trinity Mountains of Northern California, where Parvin himself resides. As Parvin states of his characters, "These aren't characters you'll find at the mall or on the bus. They've run to Trinity or find themselves there because it's the only place that'll have them, a place that's off the map, no borders, on the edge." In "A Dream She Had," for instance, Carmella and husband Harry move from the big city of San Francisco to the little town of Slayer, "where the entire Trinity County phone book, yellow and white pages combined, is ...sixty pages at most," to escape the Sick Building Syndrome that is plaguing Harry with microbes. The couple have an interesting visitor in their well and a new chance together to find their own offkey music. In these quiet tales, told in rhythmic prose, Parvin effectively captures the inhabitants of Trinity Mountains. --Los Angeles Times, January 1997 How old is this kid everyone's talking about, anyway? He's grinning off the back cover like he couldn't possibly understand the scar-tissue layers of pain and loss he writes about. From the looks of him, you could not drink this boy under the table You'd tell him your most horrible memory six beers in, and right about nine he'd get up to go write it down. "This is his first book," someone wrote on the back cover over a quote from Fenton Johnson that uses words like "mythology" and "astonishing" and "heart-stopping." First book, 87th lifetime. The stories are set in the Trinity Alps, in many ways the soul of Northern California, a region known for its ragged beauty, its marijuana and its ornery inhabitants. Roy Parvin claims it for his own. When his characters travel, it's to San Francisco, or Colorado, or Alaska. Some have memories of cities, but they are quickly erased by the woods, by "a ghosted splinter of moon hanging in an eggshell sky," stars that "leaked into the night sky," falling "northwest like a white thread pulling in the dark," by warblers "describing pinwheels," or "a handful of towns taking root under the old growth forest." See what I mean? Almost all of Parvin's characters have these things running through them; have, in other words, a wildness running through them. There's the poet Gavin, "who knew then there were hooves running inside him, knew they were running through snow and ice"; Quimby, a Wintu Indian, a "born-in-the-woods, a tintailtowen" in whom "darkness runs . . . like a horse"; and Delmont, a trapper who never was "in the horse sense of the word, never properly broken." In fact, most of Parvin's characters never were properly broken. They belong more to the place and to their own always-haunting memories than they do to the present or the people around them. And for good reason. The people around them almost always abandon them, especially when they are children. What's left in most of them is a set of tactics to survive by, a yearning for tenderness, a few good memories, and pain. They are, most of them, as bloody as

Synopsis
A thoroughly fresh voice and a rarely observed rural world come together in this extraordinary debut collection. The stories revolve around a small town in the Trinity Mountains of Northern California and the people who live there -- or flee. Caught between the fantastic and the real, existing on the fringes of mainstream society, these characters include a solitary marijuana grower who must deal with an intruder in his garden, a mystical Native American whose camp is about to be destroyed by loggers, a wanderer who finds a mentor in the wilderness, and other strange, beautiful, and haunting men and women. The driving lyricism of his writing, arresting originality of the subjects and landscapes, and insights into human nature mark this launch of a brilliant writer's career., "These stories are deep and dark, rich with metaphor, shot through with grizzly humor, playful, intense, strange."-Pam HoustonA thoroughly fresh voice and a rarely observed rural world come together in this extraordinary debut collection. In a small town in the Trinity Mountains of Northern California, strange, beautiful, and haunting men and women exist on the fringes of mainstream society. The driving lyricism, arresting originality, and uneasy insights into human nature mark this launch of a brilliant writer's career.

The packaging was sufficient and the item arrived safely, though there’s still a little room for improvement in that area. With a slightly more protective package, the service would be absolutely flawless. Overa
