''Graduates would find much new material of interest and plenty of references for further study.'' OUGS Journal 16.1, Spring Edition 1995, ''This is above all a very readable account of one of the Earth'sfundamental geological processes and as such will appeal equally to students ofgeology and geography, nonspecialists, and the general reader. His lucid style and individual ... voice entices committed and casual readers alike. This is the book for all those who have wondered why and how volcanoes erupt as they do, and are prepared to think a little to find out ...what makes this text so compelling is the sense of contact with research. Synopsis
Several of the greatest disasters in history were caused by volcanic eruptions, and some have influenced the course of human civilization. Inevitably, the sheer physical power of volcanic eruptions makes them of compelling interest. Apart from their immediate effects, large eruptions also have world-wide atmospheric effects, with implications for the global climate that are becoming of increasing current concern. In this book, Dr Francis gives an account - much of it from first-hand experience in many parts of the world - of the familiar violent aspects of volcanoes and the various forms that eruptions can take. He also goes beyond the spectacular visible displays to explore why volcanoes occur where they do, and how examples of major historical eruptions can be interpreted in terms of physical processes. Throughout he attempts to place volcanism in a planetary perspective, exploring the preeminent role of submarine volcanism on Earth and the stunning range of volcanic phenomena revealed by spacecraft exploration of the Solar System., Some of the greatest disasters in history were caused by volcanic eruptions. Students of geology, geography, and the environment, as well as the interested general reader, will find this richly illustrated book a stimulating source of expert information on one of nature's most dramatic phenomena.

Excellent prices on used books in great condition. Shipped out quickly. Product condition is accurate to rating in listing. Thanks! NOTE: For this particular book (I ordered several), it came in a soft cover rather than hard cover as the listing stated. I contacted the seller and they responded promptly. They agreed that it was a listing error and provided me with a full refund for this book (without return required) proving they are both a responsible and trustworthy seller.

This book arrived within the time period given and was in the 'very good' condition described. Unfortunately, only being packaged in a plastic bag to traverse the Atlantic meant that all four corners got a battering (I would be happy to pay bit more in future for a bit of cardboard support in packaging) but all in all, the price was good and overall service for books that are difficult to get over here, I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend this seller. Will buy again from them.
