Synopsis
Bob Bannister arrives in Prairie City and appears to be a gambler. He certainly wins at stud poker. In a confrontation between Howard Marble and a gunman named Le Beck, Bannister steps in and saves the young man's life. He also helps Howard pay off his gambling debts to Sydney Cromer, president of the Marble Dome land and irrigation project, earning Cromer's enmity. Florence Marble, owner of the Half Diamond Ranch, hires Bannister for a job she doesn't want to specify but it includes watching over her cousin, Howard Marble. Bannister resembles the description on a Reward dodger for The Maverick, a bandit wanted for murder and robbery. Sheriff Campbell is reluctant to suspect Bannister, but he is dissatisfied with Bannister's responses to questions concerning his background. Bannister also encounters hostility from the foreman at the Half Diamond, Big Bill Hayes. There also seems to be some sort of connection between Hayes and Sydney Cromer. The situation is potentially explosive because Florence Marble has invested heavily in the irrigation project, while the ranchers to the south of Marble Dome are concerned that the project will siphon off all the water they will need for their cattle herds. Bannister, following one of the men working for Big Bill Hayes, is alarmed when the man is heard reporting to Cromer, a situation that leads to gun play. Bannister's quickness with a gun only adds more fuel to Sheriff Campbell's suspicion about his real identity. The number of threats to Bannister's freedom and even to his life continue to mount as he looks into rustling on Marble range and begins to doubt the honesty of Cromer's irrigation project.Robert J. Horton was born in Coudersport, Pennsylvania. It is unfortunate he died at such a relatively early age.

- d***d (47)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzter MonatBestätigter KaufThis book is fantastic! The quality is exactly as described, it’s in great condition, the appearance is clean and basically brand-new, and it came at an excellent price. This is a first-rate, five-star seller that deserves everyone's business. They packaged the book with extreme care, shipped it quickly, and communicated effectively throughout the process. This was an excellent buying experience and I wouldn't hesitate to buy from this seller again.
- 0***1 (1591)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufThis book arrived within the time period given and was in the 'very good' condition described. Unfortunately, only being packaged in a plastic bag to traverse the Atlantic meant that all four corners got a battering (I would be happy to pay bit more in future for a bit of cardboard support in packaging) but all in all, the price was good and overall service for books that are difficult to get over here, I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend this seller. Will buy again from them.
