SynopsisAbout 45 years ago, Mortimer Adler sat down at his manual typewriter with a list of authors, books and 102 great ideas. He began writing in alphabetical order beginning with Angel and ending with World. The essays, originally published in the Syntopicon (1952), were part of Encyclopaedia Britannica's Great Books of the Western World, and were revised in 1988 for EB's second publication of the series. They are, according to Clifton Fadiman, Adler's finest work.

  • The powerful influence of eastern spiritual practice since the book 'Great ideas' was published in the 1950's

I have the 1992 version, the purpose for the purchase is to have a reference source. What has changed? What is the influence of eastern thinking on the western mind? This book is a snapshot of the dominant approach of western thinking prior to it being published in the 1950. The goal of any form of communication is to either inform, entertain or persuade. I’m surprised of the omission of 'contemplation' which is the catalyst for an individual’s sense of wonder in the external or internal worlds. The great thinkers demonstrated contemplation in abundance. Rodin's 'The Thinker' statue is a dominant symbol of contemplation. Without the focussed desire by the individual to contemplate, be enlighten, innovation and personal enquiry has no product. Wisdom is not recognised or nurtured. In the listing under 'wisdom' there is reference to 'wonder' " Wonder is the beginning of the kind of natural wisdom which a philosopher like Aristotle regards as the ultimate goal of human enquiry"(p.942) Perhaps even more striking is the influence of just two of the eastern practices such as meditation and self-reflection since this book was published. Prior to the influences of eastern spiritual practices from my personal perspective, Rodin's 'The Thinker' statue was the property of university-trained people and a subtle inferred snobbery that these academics cornered the market on intelligence and dominate the student population. Some academics were at the forefront of challenging the stale paradigm and gradually improved access of education to the individual, based on the merit of the individual not the postcode, zip code, gender, sexuality or race which have been used as excuses for exclusion. Remember, communication in any form either educates, entertains or persuades, and education benefits the individual but the downside for a nation is that it equips the individual to challenge authority! The practical applications of meditation and self-reflection have empowered the individual with the tools and autonomy to challenge the state, religion and business. The principle of diversity and the ability of the individual to challenge authority, organise and then demand accountability began in the 60's and 70's. Today the student debt burdens many professional people. Is this debt a strategy to quell and extinguish the freedom to speak out under the fear overwhelming debt, the fear of personal bankruptcy? The good ole days weren't that good for a conservative 50% of the population!
