Reviews
'A tale of the making of rich oligarchs in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union and of the mafia's role in these reforms.' - The Independent Review 'A clear, freewheeling [account of] ...the insider-dominated transfer of public property to a small number of "oligarchs."' - Foreign Affairs 'A testament to his longtime argument that Russia could have -- and should have -- done more to see to it that ordinary people were not left behind by the hastily envisioned new market economy.' - Moscow Times, 'True to type as an old Cold Warrior, Goldman, a professor emeritus of economics at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and assistant director of Harvard University's Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, is the Doubting Thomas of doubters with respect to the intentions of Russian leaders. He has consistently cast doubt over President Vladimir Putin's electoral promise to establish a "dictatorship of the law" as well as his larger commitment to democracy. Given the implications of the Lebedev case, Goldman's distrust is well founded and his book, which reopens historical rights and wrongs with the very word "piratization," is well timed.' - Moscow Times, 25th July 2003, (New Study Casts Censure on Reforms, Elizabeth Larsen) '[Goldman] was among the first critics of the Yeltsin-Gaidar economic reforms ... since then, the debate over Russia's economic path has grown increasingly heated and occassionally personal ... Goldman throws his own punched here [and] provides a clear, freewheeling version of his side of the argument.' - Foreign Affairs Magazine.

Synopsis
Examining the debacle of Russian reform, especially the emergence of oligarchs accused of using guile, intimidation and violence to reap riches, this text expertly explains Russia's problems and how they could have been avoided., In 1991, a small group of Russians emerged from the collapse of the Soviet Union and enjoyed one of the greatest transfers of wealth ever seen, claiming ownership of some of the most valuable petroleum, natural gas and metal deposits in the world. By 1997, five of those individuals were on Forbes Magazine's list of the world's richest billionaires. These self-styled oligarchs were accused of using guile, intimidation and occasionally violence to reap these rewards. Marshall I. Goldman argues against the line that the course adopted by President Yeltsin was the only one open to Russia, since an examination of the reform process in Poland shows that a more gradual and imaginative approach worked there with less corruption and a wider share of benefits. The Piratization of Russia is an accessible, timely and topical volume that is required reading for those with an interest in Russian reform. Its appeal will range from students, academics, economists and politicians to the interested lay-reader keen to understand Russia's problems and learn how they could have been avoided.

Excellent prices on used books in great condition. Shipped out quickly. Product condition is accurate to rating in listing. Thanks! NOTE: For this particular book (I ordered several), it came in a soft cover rather than hard cover as the listing stated. I contacted the seller and they responded promptly. They agreed that it was a listing error and provided me with a full refund for this book (without return required) proving they are both a responsible and trustworthy seller.

This book arrived within the time period given and was in the 'very good' condition described. Unfortunately, only being packaged in a plastic bag to traverse the Atlantic meant that all four corners got a battering (I would be happy to pay bit more in future for a bit of cardboard support in packaging) but all in all, the price was good and overall service for books that are difficult to get over here, I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend this seller. Will buy again from them.
