  • Critiquing 5 Point Calvinism

I've always loved Dr. Norman Geisler's books, and I was pleased to read his thoughts on the Calvinist/Arminian debate. Geisler identifies himself as a "moderate Calvinist". However, since he affirms the reality of free will as it relates to salvation, I consider him to be an Arminian. The author of this review is an Arminian who believes in eternal security. The author doesn't agree with Geisler on everything, but believes his essential point is clear, and well argued. Dr. Geisler spends much time dealing with Bible verses that seem to prove Calvinism. He explains them in context and shows that human free will does indeed play a role in salvation. He believes the atonement is only limited in that it only applies to those who accept it. His taking scripture so seriously removes the old Calvinist objection that Arminians are solely concerned with Philosophy and don't care about scripture. The second edition even contains a response to James White's "The Potter's Freedom".

  • Once saved always saved

I am from an Armenian background but have never been able to come to grips with many compelling verses that seems to indicate eternal security. On the other hand there are many verses that seem to indicate forfeiting ones salvation is a possibility. Dr. Geisler gives a very balanced presentation for supporting not just eternal security but the free will that is also ours. There is so much extremism from both side that are not biblically supported. I would highly recommend it no matter your current stance. You might just learn something.
