How he resolves -- or further complicates -- his problems, makes for a novel of the first order. Synopsis
In this sequel to Rabbit, Run, John Updike resumes the spiritual quest of his anxious Everyman, Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom. Ten years have passed; the impulsive former athlete has become a paunchy thirty-six-year-old conservative, and Eisenhower's becalmed America has become 1969's lurid turmoil of technology, fantasy, drugs, and violence. Rabbit is abandoned by his family, his home invaded by a runaway and a radical, his past reduced to a ruined inner landscape; still he clings to semblances of decency and responsibility, and yearns to belong and to believe.

  • Excellent small town, young couple marriage and the ups and downs of same.

Part 2 of a trilogy written by John Updike outlining the story of a young man and his wife in the 1950's. I am re-reading it as I enjoyed it so much when I was younger. Updike is an exceptionally fine writer. As you may recall, he wrote The Witches of Eastwick, which in turn became a major motion picture starring Cher and Jack Nicholson. The couple in this book suffers through the trial by fire a young marriage in a small town is during this time period, and probably universally. Updike is particularly good at getting into his character's head. I think you will like it.
