Synopsis
Prosecutor Juan Martinez takes you inside the case that captivated a nation Over the course of five years, America watched as Arizona prosecutor Juan Martinez relentlessly battled to convict Jodi Arias for the vicious murder of her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander. The salacious case wrought with sex, manipulation, and deceit rocked the nation as the prosecution exposed shocking evidence of how Arias planned and executed the crime, building an irrefutable case that would result in a guilty verdict and a controversial life sentence. Now, speaking openly for the first time, Martinez shares the inside story of his tireless work to put Jodi Ann Arias behind bars. Beginning in the hours immediately following the discovery of Travis' body, Conviction examines every aspect of Martinez' case, showing how over the course of five years his prosecution came together one piece at a time, and revealing how, almost from the very start, it seemed Arias believed she could get away with murder. Going inside the case files, Martinez chronicles the truth behind the multiple facades of Jodi Arias-a killer who played the victim with incredible skill, but was capable of unspeakable violence. Shedding light on the never-before-told story behind the most damning piece of evidence against Arias-the gas cans-Martinez recounts how he learned of their existence as well as the lengths he went to in order to ensure that they remained a secret from the public until precisely the right time. Addressing his critics and supporters alike, Martinez also details his approach during the trial, describing how his much-criticized cross-examination of Arias was actually a highly deliberate and carefully crafted strategy designed to keep a deceitful woman from becoming too comfortable on the witness stand. Complete with never-before-publicized evidence from the case and sixteen pages of photos, Conviction is the definitive account of the case that shocked America. I couldn't help but think Travis must have suffered greatly. I'd seen a lot of crime scenes since I'd joined the homicide unit, and this one spoke to an overkill. This murder seemed so methodical that I didn't think it was a crime of passion. It seemed less angry and more purposeful. Only later would I find out just how goal-oriented the murderer had truly been; as it turned out, Travis had been killed three times over . . . My eyes moved slowly around the bathroom one more time. I knew that it would be memorialized in photos and diagrams and that the whole room would be cataloged and measured. I would revisit this disturbing locale many times in the future through the photographs taken and the reports yet to be written, but I wanted to preserve as much as I could in my mind, so that wherever the investigation led I wouldn't forget the bloody scene now in front of me. -from Conviction, Juan Martinez, the fiery prosecutor who convicted notorious murderess Jodi Arias for the disturbing killing of Travis Alexander, speaks for the first time about the shocking investigation and sensational trial that captivated the nation. Through two trials, America watched with baited breath as Juan Martinez fought relentlessly to convict Jodi Arias of Murder One for viciously stabbing her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander to death. What emerged was a story wrought with sex, manipulation, and deceit that stunned the public at every turn. Arias, always playing the wronged and innocent woman, changed her story continually as her bizarre behavior surrounding the crime and its aftermath came to light. Unwavering, Arias and her defense team continued to play off the salacious details of the case, until she was finally found guilty and--controversially--sentenced to life behind bars. Now, speaking openly for the first time, prosecutor Juan Martinez will unearth new details from the investigation that were never revealed at trial, exploring key facts from the case and the pieces of evidence he chose to keep close to the vest. Throughout the trials, his bullish and unfaltering prosecution strategy was both commended and criticized, and in his book, Martinez will illuminate the unique tactics he utilized in this case and how they lead to a successful conviction, and-for the first time-discuss how he felt losing the death penalty sentence he'd pursued for years. Going beyond the news reports, Martinez will explore the truth behind the multiple facades of Jodi Arias. Sparring with her from across the stand, Martinez came to know Arias like no one else could, dissecting what it took for a seemingly normal girl to become a deluded, cunning, and unrepentant murderer. With new stories from behind the scenes of the trial and Martinez's own take on his defendant, the book takes you inside the mind of Jodi Arias like never before. Complete with 16 pages of photos from the case and trial, this book is the definitive account of the case that shocked America.

  • Wanted More from Juan

If you followed this trial there really isn't anything new in this book, unfortunately. Watching Prosecuting Attorney Juan Martinez was an amazing sight to behold. He was masterful at taking on Jodi Arias and her pathological lies. But this book was a bit of a letdown for me. I wanted more than the standard rundown of the case and trial. It would have been far more interesting to learn the inner workings of the mind and thought-process of the man who brought justice for Travis Alexander. Very glad I did not pay more than a few dollars for this book. Say what you want about Kirk Nurmi, defense attorney for Arias, but his book offered far more insight into the emotional toll it took on him and how he felt about the case. I enjoyed his book far more than Martinez' and I hope he writes the ...

  • THE MIND OF A KILLER

Very well written by Juan Martinez and gives an insight to our judicial system that you didn't see in the courtroom. This book not only gives you insight to our judicial system but also what went on in Jodi Arias mind that she thought she could actually get away with such a horrendous murder. I would recommend this book to anyone if they followed the trial or not. Juan Martinez, in my opinion, is one of the best prosecuting attorneys and you can see why by reading this book.

  • THIS IS THE BEST BOOK ON JODI ARIAS

I think this is the most accurate & informative true crime book on the most brutal slaying of Travis Alexander. Jodi Arias deserved the death penalty for this heinous & sadistic murder & not life just because she was young and thought pretty by some. I found her trashy, extremely self absorbed & incapable of being a decent human being. This book displays this in an easy to read, smooth flowing & well written book by the attorney who succeeded in getting her convicted. It's a riveting read ... In my "humble"" opinion.

  • Jodi Arias and a Relentless Prosecution

Beautifully written. Jodi Arias really thought until the end that she would go free until the gavel came down. Juan Martinez was lazer focused on getting this conviction. He did not let Jodi and her Antics dissuade him. Jodi had several pro bono attorneys assisting. Juan was by himself, but he managed to come out ahead for the State and he did. This case was his Swan Song.
