"Many of Peter Si s's readers were not yet born when 'the wall came down.' His brilliant autobiographical picture-book deserves to become a minor classic, keeping in the collective memory a shameful period of history which must never be forgotten." -- Tom Stoppard " Peter Si s' s book is most of all about the will to live one's life in freedom and should be required reading for all those who take their freedom for granted." -- Vaclav Havel"", The deployment of media choices and color throughout the book is both expert and telling: bold, stark black marker for an invading Soviet tank, dreamy blue crayon for the night the Beach Boys played Prague . . . a comprehensive portrait of an era, an artist, and the persistence of the latter in the face of the former., A powerful combination of graphic novel and picture book . . . Terrific design dramatizes the conflict between conformity and creative freedom., " Peter Si s' s book is most of all about the will to live one's life in freedom and should be required reading for all those who take their freedom for granted." -- Vaclav Havel "Peter Sis, who has entranced children and adults with his magical stories and drawings, has taken his talent to a new level. Synopsis
A NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER "I was born at the beginning of it all, on the Red side--the Communist side--of the Iron Curtain." Through annotated illustrations, journals, maps, and dreamscapes, Peter Sís shows what life was like for a child who loved to draw, proudly wore the red scarf of a Young Pioneer, stood guard at the giant statue of Stalin, and believed whatever he was told to believe. But adolescence brought questions. Cracks began to appear in the Iron Curtain, and news from the West slowly filtered into the country. Sís learned about beat poetry, rock 'n' roll, blue jeans, and Coca-Cola. He let his hair grow long, secretly read banned books, and joined a rock band. Then came the Prague Spring of 1968, and for a teenager who wanted to see the world and meet the Beatles, this was a magical time. It was short-lived, however, brought to a sudden and brutal end by the Soviet-led invasion. But this brief flowering had provided a glimpse of new possibilities--creativity could be discouraged but not easily killed. By joining memory and history, Sís takes us on his extraordinary journey: from infant with paintbrush in hand to young man borne aloft by the wings of his art. This title has Common Core connections. The Wall is a 2007 New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year, a 2008 Caldecott Honor Book, a 2008 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year, the winner of the 2008 Boston Globe - Horn Book Award for Nonfiction, and a nominee for the 2008 Eisner Award for Best Publication for Kids., A NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER "I was born at the beginning of it all, on the Red side--the Communist side--of the Iron Curtain." Item was priced well and a good value, received in a very timely manner and well-packaged. Was in the exact condition described and appearance matched seller's picture(s). Would recommend seller unreservedly and will do business with them in the future. Although customer service was not needed for this sale, I have dealt with Book Outlet numerous times over the years and, when necessary, can say their customer service team is top-notch!

This is a frustrated positive feedback. I am always perplexed when sellers choose to ship via an "off-brand" shipper, e.g., OSM Worldwide. This tends to delay the time it takes to get to me vs more "traditioaal" shipped, e.g., USPS, UPS, or FED-EX. This is a pretty good seller. The price was good, the shipping pretty prompt (though deliver took a bit longer than I expected), and the communication was pretty good as well.

The book was carefully packaged and arrived in perfect condition. (Nothing is more upsetting than to buy a "coffee table" book of photos and have it arrive in a tattered condition due to insufficient packaging.) In this case, it arrived in the condition that was advertised by the seller. Thanks so much!!

  • powerful teaching moment

Great teaching opportunities in the book, maybe too deep for younger readers that are used to picture books, much of the meaning had to be explained b/c of a lack of context. Nonetheless a moving and powerful book!
