Outstanding Performance by Maggie Smith
Outstanding performance by Maggie Smith. She is a truly amazing actress. It was interesting to see her as a younger person. She is consistently, always a fine actress who is interesting to watch--whether it's in an earlier film where she is young, or a more recent film where she is older, she always turns in a consistently great performance. This film was well cast and directed, and although it reflects an earlier time period, it still reflects basic human emotions that are here today, and very much in the present. There is an element of timelessness about the film, that people in today's world can still easily relate to. I am glad to have this one in my collection. Storytelling at it's best
This intriguing slice-of-life story is a wonderful character study and Dame Maggie is, as you would expect, at the top of her form. Even so, there is a great set of other characters to round out the story and give us a glimpse into what life is like in times past.

Fine movie, worth many views.
I have loved this movie for years. I owned a dvd copy and watched it several times. When I moved it got lost in the confusion, so I just ordered this copy to make sure it would be available again. This movie not only has great characters and a strong story, and a brilliant actress in Maggie Smith, but it gives us a window into history in the period just before World War II. Maggie Smith is the only person about whom I have used the word "gravitas" to describe the power with which she imbues the roles she plays in any film. She is believable at all times, whether stern or frivolous or incredulous. The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is no exception. Don't look to compare this film with the book, it won't match in characters or timeline. This is more straightforward and heartfelt. People who enjoy this film will also appreciate Smith's performance in "The Millionairess", a BBC play of the week from around the same era.Maggie Smith is the only person about whom I have used the word "gravitas" to describe the power with which she imbues the roles she plays in any film. Maggie Smith's Headstrong & Sensual Teacher with an almost cult like bevy of young girl students.
This must have been somewhat scandalous back in the day. Maggie Smith is perfection as the teacher "in her prime" as she reminds everyone-including her impressionable girls.
