SynopsisA groundbreaking work on myth, symbol, and ritual by one of the most acclaimed historians of our time. In The Sacred and the Profane, Mircea Eliade observes that while contemporary people believe their world is entirely profane or secular, they still at times find themselves connected unconsciously to the memory of something sacred. It's this premise that both drives Eliade's exhaustive exploration of the sacred--as it has manifested in space, time, nature and the cosmos, and life itself--and buttresses his expansive view of the human experience., A groundbreaking work on myth, symbol, and ritual by one of the most acclaimed historians of our time., A highly original and scholarly work on spirituality by noted historian Mircea Eliade In The Sacred and the Profane , Mircea Eliade observes that while contemporary people believe their world is entirely profane, or secular, they still at times find themselves connected unconsciously to the memory of something sacred. • Important Classic if You're Interested In the Nature of Spirituality

This book is important. It doesn't differentiate enough IMO between religion and spirituality, but it does intelligently discuss the (mostly misunderstood or lost) relationship between religious RITUAL and spiritual experience. Eliade had apparently shady ties or at least a serious flirtation with National Socialism (Nazism), unfortunately; but he also had substantial things to discuss--probably the best discussion of these matters since William James's "The Varieties of Religious Experience." Whatever you think of his possible nefarious associations (and I condemn them if true), I think this book should be required for any literate modern person exploring the actual spiritual aspects of being human, whether from the perspective of psychedelic experience or any other.
