SynopsisBo Tully, sheriff of Blight County, Idaho, has seen his share of small-town crime. Fact is, everyone in the area knows Tully, and knows his Blight Way of doing things. But when he and his deputy hike into the deep woods, tracking a suspected bank robber, little do they realize that they are about to witness a murder--and that, in turn, will lead the sheriff on an intricate trail, a series of twists and turns demanding his utmost attention and keenest crime-solving abilities. Along the way, Tully has to deal with the likes of a shadowy local named Gridley Shanks, who seems to have a spider web of connections throughout town; two out-of-town elk hunters who don't know much about elk hunting, but are tied to the murder; an elderly couple who end up dead while caring for a rundown mansion and property out of town; a sassy assistant named Daisy; an attractive, tough FBI agent named Angie, who suddenly finds herself involved in her first murder investigation; and a host of other characters. There's also the case of missing loot, which no one can find--at least, until Tully puts his mind to it. Will Tully get his man (or men) this time? Does the Blight Way ever fail? • It's a good piece past Blight and then left at Famine.

Civilization doesn't spend much time in Blight County, Idaho. There the land and its wildness has more influence than social media. In the four corners of this nation, society grows wild and the people live by the ways of nature. In this world, Bo Tully is a snarled mixture of king and wizard. Sheriff, artist, folk hero, a man with a past and a way with the locals. The Blight Way. If you're a Pat McManus fan, you'll love the pithy, self-depricating humor in The Tamarack Murders. Rancid Crabtree and Retch Sweeny may be missing, but Batim Scrags, Indian Dave and Lurch are in there and we'll add Gridley Shanks. A way with names and a way with mystery. To delve too far into this tale would rob the reader. No deep earth-moving questions will be answered; if that's what you're after, go elsewhere. The Tamarack Murders is more adventure and escape. Some thirty years ago, I lived in the Pacific Northwest and I knew the people in that wild land. In the the years since I left, I would like to think that it's still that way. The Blight Way.

Right up there with the Stephanie Plum mysteries in my opinion. Very enjoyable.

  • Patrick McManus is one of the greatest living humorists.

Think Mark Twain for the modern era. As someone who grew up in Northern Idaho, I can tell you that the Bo Tully stories of Bonner, uh, Blight County ring true. I think I even recognize some of the characters. Please keep writing for us, Pat!
