Inspired by the too-ludicrous-to-be-believed National Football League strike of 1987, Howard Deutch's THE REPLACEMENTS follows a team of scab players as they fill in for the real pros. Jimmy McGinty (Gene Hackman), a compassionate and dedicated coach, is rehired by the owner of the Washington Sentinels to pull together a new crew in order to finish off the season and keep the stadium filled. This includes a safety who is on work release, a lightning-quick wide receiver with bricks for hands, a deranged linebacker-SWAT team member, a chain-smoking Welsh kicker, and Shane Falco (Keanu Reeves), a former college quarterback who lost his chance at the big time after a disastrous Sugar Bowl appearance. The newly formed squad must learn to set aside its differences if it is to win three out of four games and make it to the playoffs. Along the way, Falco finds himself harassed by the Sentinels' star quarterback, Eddie Martel, as well as falling in love with the team's head cheerleader, Annabelle (Brooke Langton). A final showdown against the strike-breaking reigning champions gives McGinty and Falco one last chance at redemption. Deutch's lighthearted comedy is greatly aided by Hackman and Reeves's surprisingly sincere performances.

    Funny movie, REAL humor, not fake like late night talk shows.

    Well-done movie. Even though the story is a fictional take-off from the real-life NFL strike that resulted in temporary non-pro players once upon a time, the actors, script, and production of this movie is first rate! Totally believable football "actors"...including Keanu Reeves who can actually throw some darn good passes. Plus, this is the first serious role I enjoyed Mr. Reeves' acting skills. Reeves romantic love interest is a wonderful character (and actress) and their relationship grows into a sizzling glow of love, yet the scenes remain clean and G rated. The humor is outstanding! This is a well-written script with original jokes and gag lines that seem SO refreshing compared to modern humor which isn't funny at all.     Well, hmmm

    Though I love Keanu Reevrs and what he brings to a wide tange of characterd, this movie is an earlier film. He has grown into an amazing actor, though this movie shows him still near the beginning- still learning.

    A great family film for the teenagers and above!

    This is one of my all time favorite films... There are some minor adult themes, but otherwise the humor is consistent, there's a sweet love story, and the cast intertwines wonderfully... There is a sport back story, but this is more of a team building show, leaving the ball aside...

    I've watched Keanu Reeves since Bill and Ted's adventures when I was a kind . He's an awesome actor . Some people my like or dislike but I liked the movie . Movie was well taken care of in like new condition
