Sophie (Seyfried) is part of a team of volunteers who respond to the letters. When Sophie answers a letter from 1957, the woman who wrote it (Redgrave) decides to seek out the one that got away (Redgrave's real-life love, Franco Nero û DJANGO), and romance starts to blossom all around.

Vanessa Redgrave gives a graceful and poignant performance as the elegant Claire searching for her Italian beau, and adds a huge dose of romance to this rom-com. Director, Gary Winick and screenwriters Jose Rivera and Tim Sullivan succeed in refreshing the old tale of 'true love', in a movie that is sure to convert any sceptic into a believer; there is no gore, no car chases, no gun fights or pratfalls - just one beautiful love story.
