When Trumpets Fade
A riveting World War II account of a single American rifle squad fighting in the God forsaken Hurtgen Forest. Actors conduct themselves much like real soldiers -- (that is: not a lot of your typical "pansey acting Hollywood types" in this one). A powerful close-up view of what the Battle for the Hürtgen Forest was like, on both sides.
This is a well-acted and dramatic film based on an horrific 6 month battle that took place in the Hürtgen Forest, in the southwest corner of Germany, from September 1944 to February 1945. The film depicts in first person, squad-type realism the seemingly hopeless struggle by American forces to push the Germans out of the woods, and suffering hundreds of casualties in the process. The Hurtgen forest campaign of late 1944.
The bloody carnage in the Hurtgen Forrest in late 1944 was overshadowed by the blitzkrieg Ardennes offensive that started in December. It was a meatgrinder for American forces ordered to take a heavily fortified position on elevated ground. It makes you wonder why field commissions don't happen more often because the officer's in the rear are oblivious to what's actually taking place on the forward lines. The film projects the horrors of war & the atmosphere of the Hurtgen forest is particularly dark. Some scenes leave impressions on the viewer that are shocking, but they did indeed happen.
