Contemporary Portrait of Marilyn Monroe in Words and Pictures
Eve Arnold was the only professional woman photographer to both know Marilyn Monroe as a friend and to photograph her over a period of years. Many women have written well and with insight about Monroe in recent years but rarely has this been done by a woman who knew her intimately and personally. This book is an "appreciation" a neglected word which means an honoring of, a respect for, an understanding of one as a valuable and unique person. Unlike almost all of the photo/journalism books about Monroe, done by men, this one reflects a "womanly" perspective and consists of mostly candid shots, made, as Arnold says, "between moments" of filming or presentations or speeches.
