  • The Originals Do It Again

I was thrilled when the original four members of Asia reunited for Fantasia: Live In Tokyo. But I thought at the time, “That will be that; it won’t keep going.” Then I was floored when they recorded Phoenix— a fantastic record, though overall a bit mellow for an unexpected reunion that felt as if it should have roared in, all cylinders blazing. Then Omega came out with the energy and drama I craved. It’s fantastic. But I knew these guys had even better in them. And then here it is, XXX (pronounced “triple x”); I don’t know why I took so long to finally add it to my collection, but better late than never. This album brings it back to the fire and energy of Asia’s debut so long ago— but with more experience, both in music and life, to give it much greater depth— and so, it’s actually a much better album, though not so well-known. John Wetton’s voice doesn’t seem to have aged a year, and Palmer, Howe and Downes are still demonstrating the same legendary virtuoso performances as always. They really stretch out into some styles you wouldn’t normally hear from them, too, and quite successfully. There’s the Deep Purple-like ne’er-do-well tail of “No Religion”— yeah, Asia can be story tellers when they want to be— and the synth-pop approach of the ultra-smooth and meaningful “Bury Me In Willow.” “Al Gatto Nero” is also very different for them, with a fun Italian language chorus worth learning to sing along with. And this deluxe version’s bonus track, “Reno (Silver and Gold)” features a gorgeous piano riff Billy Joel in his heyday would have been jealous of. (This song is so good, it should just have been a regular track on all editions.). The DVD is enjoyable, but don’t expect anything overly-revealing. But the music here is the main event, and if you love classic Asia but never heard this album, you’re missing out. We should be glad the original lineup got this beautiful work out there before the loss of Mr. Wetton. This and the follow-up, Gravitas (without Steve Howe, but young gun Sam Coulson in guitar), are fine testaments to the Wetton-led Asia, and essential entries in their catalog.

  • Like & Love

I never write reviews. But I must say, if you like Asia, you’ll LOVE this concert! I wish now that I had attended (I’m about 90 minutes away). Hearing clearly each of these four musicians play together makes me think of Yes, King Crimson, and ELP all rolled into one. Not only are their classics great, their newest material is surprisingly hard/hitting tunes.
