Use a paper "clamp" to hold the LED steady against a silicone soldering pad - covering one contact while soldering the other. Even without a lens they have good coverage. Modified KY-032 units with fly leads - whose HS0038B'D' RX gives a steady UNPULSED output within 30cm. These LEDS also appear to be rated for much more current than a standard IR LED - could use a MOS driver with an NE555 generating the 38kHz.
