A Rousing Seafaring Adventure
With the likes of Alec Guinness and Dirk Bogarde at the helm (literally) of this sea saga, how can you go wrong. My favorite sea movie of all time is Master and Commander. But this film gave that film a run for the money and they are now tied for the status of my all-time favorite. This film, made nearly 50 years before that one, had NO CGI, so all the effects you see in it were actually filmed as they happened. In fact, I'd challenge any eagle-eyed viewer to decide which scenes were of an actual ship and which ones were of models. The sea battle at the end will blow you away because of its realism--despite the supposed "lack" of fantastic special effects at the time. Plus the story line is incredible in that it pits Guinness' character against Bogarde's. I won't tell you why or how because that would spoil the film for you. I'll just say that if you like films about sailing ships of the late 1700s, then you will be VERY pleased with this film.
