SynopsisThe most important aspect of this book is upon the contemporary generation of young Indians who have been aggressively searching for roots of their own in the structure of universal reality. They look to it for spiritual guidance, for sociological identity, for political insight, and the affirmation of the continuing substance of Indian tribal life., The most famous Native American book ever written, Black Elk Speaks is the acclaimed story of Lakota visionary and healer Nicholas Black Elk (18631950) and his people during the momentous, twilight years of the nineteenth century. Black Elk grew up in a time when white settlers were invading the Lakotas' homeland, decimating buffalo herds and threatening to extinguish their way of life. Black Elk and other Lakotas fought back, a dogged resistance that resulted in a remarkable victory at the Little Bighorn and an unspeakable tragedy at Wounded Knee. Beautifully told through the celebrated poet and writer John G. Neihardt, Black Elk Speaks offers much more than a life story. Black Elk's profound and arresting religious visions of the unity of humanity and the world around him have transformed his account into a venerated spiritual classic. Whether appreciated as a collaborative autobiography, a history of a Native American nation, or an enduring spiritual testament for all humankind, Black Elk Speaks is unforgettable. This special edition features all three prefaces to Black Elk Speaks that John G. Neihardt wrote at different points in his life, a map of Black Elk's world, a reset text with Lakota words reproduced using the latest orthographic standards, and color paintings by Lakota artist Standing Bear that have not been widely available for decades.

  • Black Elk Speaks

This amazing story as told by Black Elk and friends gives us a different perspective of the American Indians than what we perhaps have been used to hearing. But in ways it is similar to that of any mother and father who loves and cares for their children including during times of sickness. These people, far removed from any modern society, have a sense of good and bad and this book gives us a glimpse of where they get their wisdom. I know that there is more to this story than what has been told in this book mostly dedicated to the telling of Black Elk's vision since he was 9 years old and trying to make sense of it. But this book is worth the reading in order to understand what life as an American Indian was like.

  • Way Too Used!

I knew i was getting a 'previously used' book but the shape this is in is pretty bad. The cover's been torn and heavily taped up. The front pages, as far as i know, there's underlining. And if that weren't enough it's highlighted too. I'm not sure what happened but all of the other used books i've purchased have been in very/near new shape! This book looks like a grade school childs text book!

  • Inspiring beyond words.

One of the very best authentic, visionary records of American Indian spirituality.

  • A must read for anyone interested in native American ways and spirituality.

A 'Must Read' for young native Americans - to know something of the ways and knowledge of the mighty Sioux nation- from a first hand account by a warrior and shaman. Black Elk lived and fought in the Indian wars of the late 1800's.

  • Compelling. Dream life is wiser than waking life

Refreshing for me to read something outside of our own culture. The imagery is beautiful and the visions of the country in 1930 are sad for the Sioux / Lakota nation and us

  • When Black Elk speaks we all must listen.

The content of Black Elk's wisdom, heart and effect on his people is important to know, though difficult to withhold tears at the outcome of the Ogala Sioux's destiny at the hands of the encroaching imperialists.
