Billy Wilder's adaptation of Alexandre Breffort's stage farce stars Shirley MacLaine as the Parisian prostitute of the title. When Nestor Patou (Jack Lemmon) a naďve, uncharacteristically honest young gendarme decides to raid Chez Moustache, the bistro which provides a base of operations for many of the Les Halles streetwalkers, including the popular Irma, his boss Inspector Lefevre (Herschel Bernardi) is among the johns, and Nestor quickly finds himself unemployed. But, smitten with Irma, the former cop returns to Les Halles and after a fight with her extortionate pimp Hippolyte (Bruce Yarnell), Nestor takes over his role. As he and Irma become more involved, he becomes increasingly jealous toward her steady parade of customers, and finally resolves to become one. Posing as impotent British aristocrat Lord X, he offers to pay Irma a sizeable sum simply to spend some time with him on a weekly basis. The plot thickens when, on a trip to England, Irma seduces Lord X, whose sexual malady is proven to have been somewhat overstated. Composer Andre Previn won an Oscar for best score.

They don't make movies like this anymore
This is a great movie about what love and determination will do, and then how jealousy can consume your thinking. Jack Lemmon and Shirley McClane are the best actors for this movie, and the bartender makes it as well. Great Movie, love as a kid and I will enjoy many times on my retirement.

Warm, Lighthearted and Full O' Laughs!
It's never too late to become a fan of director Billy Wilder. I saw a trailer for Irma la Douce online and decided to add it to my DVD collection. I'm glad I did! This film is excellent with its great cast of characters and humorous storyline. Shirley Maclaine and Jack Lemon have a great chemistry. You'll also see actors like Howard McNear (Floyd from Andy Griffith), Grace Lee Whitney (Yeoman Rand of Star Trek) and iconic funnyman Cliff Osmond.

Better than I remembered. I saw this movie when it first came outin 1963. I was 9 years old. You had to be 21 to get in the the theatre.

Best Old Movie
It’s Great, I haven’t seen it for about 40 years but I do remember loving it!! It’s a Classic and the young adults in my family now love it too!! Happy to own “Irma La Douce”
