  • Toshiba HD DVD – The Loser in the War

HD DVD and Blu-Ray were in development as early as 2002, with HiDef players and discs hitting the market in 2006. Unfortunately the systems were not compatible, and so the war was on. This battle certainly is similar to the Betamax – VHS battle of the 1970’s. Betamax had slightly better picture quality, but VHS had far longer playing time, and won the war. In this HiDef war Toshiba championed HD DVD while Sony promoted BluRay. HD DVD had the advantage in having more interactive capabilities (which is why the format was adopted by Xbox 360), while BluRay had greater storage capacity. By 2007 BluRay was winning the sales battle (there were rumors of massive payola involved) and by 2008 Toshiba had discontinued HD DVD. The Toshiba HD DVD player format has some nice features – such as being able to access the menu while the disc is playing. There are about 100 movies that were only released on HD DVD, so consumers may want a HD DVD player as a second player in order to view those movies. The Dukes of Hazzard movie is only available on HD DVD for example...... not sure why anyone would want it, but if you must have it in HD then HD DVD is the only way to go! LOL The picture quality is excellent, but I have noticed of 4 HD DVDs I purchased, one will not load at all. I don’t know if it’s a faulty disc, or a problem with the player. If consumers experienced this problem that may have been a reason for the decline of HD DVD. Standard DVDs play perfectly. Just a reminder to eBay buyers – HD DVDs absolutely will not play on a standard DVD player or on a BluRay player.

  • Toshiba HD-D3 HD DVD Player

Good unit to play HD-DVD movies. Max resolution 1080i. Better unit than the XBOX 360 HD player. HDMI, Component, Composite video, no s-video. Must have remote for full function. Works much better after firmware update.
