Richard Rohr continues to guide us to greater wholeness. The latest example is his new book,  Breathing Under Water . A prolific writer, his books have helped countless souls, especially those who struggle with issues of brokenness and seek transformation. -- National Catholic Reporter (Read the full review.), Richard Rohr continues to guide us to greater wholeness. The latest example is his new book, Breathing Under Water . A prolific writer, his books have helped countless souls, especially those who struggle with issues of brokenness and seek transformation. -- National Catholic Reporter (Read the full review.), "Spirituality is perhaps an ill-chosen word in this book's subtitle, given that Rohr's characterization of Christianity is (and always has been) relentlessly incarnational. Here his identification of the gospel with the core tenets of Alcoholics Anonymous underscores how redemption comes to us in and through the messes we make of our lives, not despite them. Anyone with first- or even secondhand knowledge of the Twelve Steps can attest to the unsettling challenges they present to safe, respectable, middle-class Christianity: 'When the churches forget their own gospel message, the Holy Spirit sneaks in through the ducts and air vents. AA meetings have been very good ductwork, allowing fresh air both in and out of many musty and mildewed churches.'"- The Christian Century, .... Breathing Under Water is a must-read for any person who recognizes the need to go "inward" on their soul's journey to question what their relationship is with God, themselves, and others. The author guides us on a journey that begins with a powerlessness or being shipwrecked on a deserted island. It is God's greatest surprise and constant disguise. We always want to be the manager of our lives. But God makes sure that several things will come our way that we cannot manage on our own. ..... What Breathing Under Water comes to be is an understanding that those people who have undergone suffering and pain come up to be a compassionate people, loved by God, to be there for others experiencing a similar challenge in life. Rohr summarizes that a graced moment from God is when the suffering people can love and trust a suffering God, and through this deep transformation, will save and be there for one another. -- Paula J. Scraba, PhD., The Cord, Franciscan priest and prolific author Rohr ( Falling Upward ) is a perfect writer on the subject of the 12 Steps. He understands how radical a change they bring about, and that the 12 Step program is preeminently spiritual. His easy-to-read book is essentially a commentary on each of the steps, with twelve chapters and a postscript that concisely tackles the big religious question of human suffering, suffering with which addicts and their families are intimately acquainted. Jesus, Rohr answers, is no stranger to suffering. ...This is a good book for those in recovery from addiction and those who love them.- Publishers Weekly|9781616361570|, "Spirituality is perhaps an ill-chosen word in this book's subtitle, given that Rohr's characterization of Christianity is (and always has been) relentlessly incarnational. When we learn to identify our addiction, embrace our brokenness, and surrender to God, we begin to bring healing to ourselves and our world. In Breathing Under Water , Richard Rohr shows how the gospel principles in the Twelve Steps can free anyone from any addiction--from an obvious dependence on alcohol or drugs to the more common but less visible addiction that we all have to sin., RICHARD ROHR is founding director of the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He considers the proclamation of the gospel to be his primary call, and some related themes he addresses include eco-spirituality, Scripture as liberation, non-dual thought, the integration of action and contemplation, peace and justice issues, and male spirituality. Author of numerous books, including Things Hidden: Scripture as Spirituality , Wondrous Encounters: Scripture for Lent , and Preparing for Christmas With Richard Rohr: Daily Meditations for Advent , he gives retreats and lectures internationally. He is a regular contributing writer for Sojourners and Tikkun magazines ., "A perfect writer on the subject of the Twelve Steps, [Rohr] explains how the renowned AA program is preeminently spiritual and has the power to rescue people from the tidal wave of compulsive behavior and addiction by helping them 'breathe under water' and discover God's love and compassion. Rohr identifies the core Christian principles in the Twelve Steps and connects them to the message of the Gospels. His easy-to-read book devotes a separate chapter to each of the steps and ends with a postscript that concisely addresses the question of human suffering with which addicts and their families are initimately acquainted. The deep communion and compassion formed by shared pain allows those suffering from addiction to reach out to help their fellow sufferers. Rohr draws on talks he has given for over twenty years to people in recovery and those who counsel and live with people with addictive behavior, offering hope, understanding, and encouragement to anyone dealing with the codependence and dysfunction rampant in our society."-Joan Clear, Liguorian, "Spirituality is perhaps an ill-chosen word in this book's subtitle, given that Rohr's characterization of Christianity is (and always has been) relentlessly incarnational. Great seller, exactly as pictured/described. quick shipping, well packaged. Books arrived in very, very good shape. A very good value for the price. Book was shipped sepeartely from the main package (4 books total) which caused some confusion when receiving them, but I figured it out. 2 tracking numbers actually used (2 packages), but only one was listed.

Books are just as shown in the pictures. Though a bit dirtier than expected, the price was right. Since the seller gave the package, which was well packed, directly to USPS, instead of an intermediate carrier, it arrived very quickly. I would buy from this seller again.

Item arrived quickly and was in good condition for a used textbook, just as described. Priced great. Appears just as pictured. Basic level one Spanish textbook which touches on culture as well as grammar and vocabulary. Item was shipped in thin plastic envelope and could've used better packing, but was not damaged during delivery. Would use this seller again.

  • I'm Not Afraid Anymore

How do I determine who I am, and what does it take to gain a better understanding of that person? I have worked with the twelve steps for over twenty years and still am constantly learning more about myself. Spirituality is not about religion, but rather about the relationship I have with someone/something outside of myself. How do I help that relationship to grow, and how do I grow as an individual and become a better person? The author, along with the twelve steps, helps me to take a deep look at both. I found the workbook extremely helpful, as I answered questions about what I had read, and how my life had been affected. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to expand their understanding of their own persona and how they can continue to grow.

  • Great Book for anyone living in this Culture

12 step program is set of instructions to "Spiritual Enlightenment" or "Salvation" if you will' Recovery from the "Bondage of Self" goes far beyond freedom from addiction. Recovered from a "Hopeless State of Mind and Body" is an invaluable gift but so much more is available if I am Willing to " Continue" as is suggested in Step Eleven. This is one Author who has realized the real value of The 12 Step Movement for individuals and our culture.

  • a new perspective on recovery

Bill Wilson's 12 STEPS for recovery were written in 1938? What this book does is relate each step to passages in the Bible. The author claims that we all knew this all along. It just took centuries to put it down in a concise written work (The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous). What was most compelling to me though is that the author explains the struggles one experiences with each step. If you've ever tried to help someone in recovery who is struggling this book gives insight into what might be blocking the individual. An insightful look at recovery. I must admit though I almost didnt read it after reading the introduction. He seems to bash AA. That totally rubbed me the wrong way. I disagree with 80% of what he said in the introduction. I doubt that the author himself was ever ...

  • A Spiritual Journey

I have read this twice now and am amazed at the insight and skill with which this book is written. It connects (for me) the 12 step program to spiritual growth throughout the ages and reaffirms my faith in a Loving Creator. I am grateful that a good friend gave me a copy and I have since purchased two copies of my own to give to other travelers.

  • 12 Step Insight

For any AA, this give practical insight into 12 step tools of recovery. Expands mechanical knowledge of what we are aimed at in daily and life time of recovery. For newbie - better understanding of foundation, for old timers - more depth to why and what theology of recovery comes from and ultimate goals. it aims for.
