  • Influential albums, influential band

I can only imagine what it must've felt like hearing Gilded Palace for the first time when it was released. What a life changing event. Of course I exaggerate, but there is a reason it's considered one of the most infulential records. With the exception of Hippie Boy (ugh), every song is a winner. Although I prefer the ISB's version of Do You Know How it Feels. Juanita is very emotional "She's brought back the life that I once threw away." You can really feel it in the singing. Dark End as well. Of course, HB #1 is top notch and was the first FBB song I ever heard. The album has some rough spots and is far from polished, which makes it even more endearing, in some ways - Gram clearing his throat on Christine's Tune and someones (Hillman?) nose whistles on Do You Know How It Feels, which is distracting. The style is hard to define since it's all over the place, soft ballads, upbeat country style, pop-rock, even spoken word. Cosmic American Music is what Gram calls it. Gilded Palace of Sin should be in every music fan's collection. To me, Burrito Deluxe is superior in some ways. Excellent songs and a little more polished - Image of Me, High Fashion Queen, Man in the Fog, Older Guys, and THE definitive version of Wild Horses, which features a strong vocal by Gram and some very tasty piano in the mix. Though not as well received, this album is also a must for music lovers. Image of Me blows away every other version out there. Man in the Fog is a bouncy cajun number that departs quite a bit from FBB's style, or the even the Byrds and ISB. Bernie Leadon's influence? Older Guys reminds me of a Stones song (maybe the video put that in my head. Gram trying to emulate Mick Jagger, or vice versa). Sadly, this was the last official FBB album to feature Gram. There are other Gram era FBB albums floating around. Demos and live recordings. Maybe even a single or two. Those are worth checking out if you have the opportunity.
