In THE MAJESTIC, Jim Carrey stretches his talents and proves that he can be a credible serious actor with his portrayal of Peter Appleton, a Hollywood B-movie screenwriter who is black listed during the McCarthy era. A car accident costs him his memory, and in the small coastal town where he ends up, he is mistaken for a local hero, presumed dead almost 10 years ago in the war. Unable to recall anything of his "past" in the town, Appleton not only embraces his new identity, but becomes a pillar of the community, restoring hope that the residents lost along with many of their young men in World War II. In the process, he discovers new inspiration, new purpose, and a new life.<BR>Director Frank Darabont, true to form, tells a leisurely tale of a man's renewed faith in himself and in others. The film is an homage to old-fashioned values and proud-to-be-an-American patriotism, studded with rock-solid performances not just by Carrey, but by film veterans Martin Landau, Hal Holbrook, and Ron Rifkin, among others. Listen as well for cameo voice overs by Garry Marshall, Matt Damon, and Carl and Rob Reiner.

    creditable engaging story line

    I have never been a fan of Jim Carrey but this is not his usual film role. This is a lovely story set in the 1950s but I won't spoil the plot. Directed by Frank Darabont of Shawshank and the Green Mile so this should tell you about it's credentials. A very charming and engaging story line, ideal lazy afternoon watching.

    Feel Good Cinema At Its Best

    What a super film. No blood, no violence, no sex, just a brilliantly staged film about how a community can come together to make life better. Set in just post war America, in a small town devastated by its loss during WWII, a man is mistaken as the son of a local businessman. He is accepted into the community and changes everyone's lives by revitalising community spirit. I can't say much more without spoiling the plot, but developments later in the film make you think that maybe he wasn't such a great guy in the first place. However - stick with it. This is not a Jim Carrey comedy, but there are a few laughs along the way, but this is a great love story that needs to be watched on a lazy Sunday afternoon with the one that you love. Great film, highly recommended if you're into this ...

    Jim Carrey plays straight brilliantly

    Most reviewers gave this film a thumbs down, but I think that they were wrong. Unless they were expecting the usual manic Carrey performance that it. A slightly stretched case of mistaken identity is used to give the viewer an inside view of small town US life in the 1950s. My only complaint would be that they tried so hard that it was almost too perfect.

    One of my favourite, "all time" movies !

    Great film, fabulous storyline - Jim Carey in an unusual but engaging, "straight" role. Martin Landau at his best.
