Product Information

Elmer Gantry is a charming, fast-talking con, working the road as a traveling salesman in the 1920s. Burt Lancaster stars as the elusive Gantry in this charismatic adaptation of Sinclair Lewis's 1927 novel. When Gantry runs across a group of traveling evangelists, he charms their saintly leader, Sister Susan Falconer (Jean Simmons), and becomes her partner, preaching fire and brimstone in the packed revival tents of the hardened Midwest. Gantry's robust style and Falconer's Joan of Arc-like spirit skyrocket the two minstrels to fame and fortune as they travel with their flock waging war on sinners and speakeasies--until they preach in a big city and catch the eye of a tough prostitute (Shirley Jones) who knows that Elmer is not quite as holy as he appears. This biting portrait of the business of religion was highly innovative at the time of its release, casting a slightly tarnished light on the hustle and theatrics of traveling ministries, while analyzing the true nature of faith and redemption. Lancaster's performance as the salesman turned preacher is dynamic and highly charismatic, full of energy and robust flair.

    TV Evangelists Started Here

    The open tent revival and the characters who occupy this are so interesting. Burt Lancaster, my favorite and under-rated actor starts out as whoring, drinking, cheap travel salesman, falls in love with Sharon Falconer (Jean Simmons), head of the revival Evangelical movement, is attracted to Burt (Elmer), she needed to leave the movement and marry Burt. Unfortunately, Falconer falls for her own super-natural powes (making a deaf man hear) that she can't hear the beginnings of a roaring fire inside the tent she has gone over the edge.. The movie ends with Burt, who will probably go back to his old ways. And the only thing left to Jean is her bible which is slightly charred. The role of the hard-boiled newspaper man (sorry, I can't remember his name), is also excellent in his role.

    Elmer Gantry

    Because I had come across the book, I wanted to see the film. Burt Lancaster was never one of my favorite actor's. His portrayal of Elmer might have been improved without that forced laugh he used in trying to portray an uncouth laugh... It didn't come naturally and was distracting. A lot can be said for the improvement in today's more realistic characterizations. Lancaster was from the macho, pretty-boy era. Maybe they'll make a re-do. The seller was very prompt and there were no problems from that end.

    " Holy Bible Is Believe Everything Said Preacher"

    I received Elmer Gantry DVD enclosed with the package in the mailbox on Wednesday December 7th. It's brand new and set up the closed captions on the back of DVD cover. I haven't seen this movie for long time from now. Burt Lancaster and Jean Simmons are acting the screenplay is great experience. I appreciate for sending this items so especially.
