In a lavish 18th Century parlor in Austria, an elderly man is found, by his servant, with his throat slashed. The wound is self-inflicted, and the man is the little-known composer Salieri (F. Later. from his cell in an insane asylum, Salieri tells a priest (Herman Meckler) the story of his association with Mozart, confessing that he actually killed the brilliantly gifted but troubled young man. Abraham, in the role that won him the Best Actor Oscar, is the celebrated court composer to Joseph II (Jeffrey Jones)--his confidence and religious dedication shaken when he meets the boorish 26-year-old Mozart as he chases his future wife (Elizabeth Berridge) around a party while making obscene remarks. Furious that this clownish boy can produce such beautiful music, Salieri determines to keep Mozart's talent from lasting recognition and sets himself on a course for Mozart's destruction that leads to his own as well. Mozart continues to mount beautiful, moving operas (incredibly staged in the film), but becomes obsessed with writing a Requiem as his friends, family, health, and resources waste away, Salieri's manipulating presence always there.     Choose the theatrical release!

    A marvellous film. Avoid the disastrous Director's Cut. This is the one to love and enjoy, even if it has to be the dual layer format, unfortunately!

    Forget history and just enjoy the film

    Although a great deal of leeway has been taken regarding historical accuracy, I found the movie highly entertaining. What was emphasized was the undoubted genius of Mozart. The film was built on the supposed bitter rivalry between Mozart and Salieri which I believe did not exist in reality. The music is used to great effect throughout and the costumes and staging are excellent. I had never heard of Salieri before watching this film and the movie prompted me to do a bit of research. I would imagine any fans of Salirei would have been pretty annoyed at how he was treated in the movie as by all historical accounts he was a well respected composer and teacher. Mozart, on the other hand, appears to have been just as uncouth as the film portrayed him. Great stuff.

    A film masterpiece: superb music, visuals, humour, history, and mystery

    This is a brilliant film, made with immense care and artistry. Yes, the claim against Salieri in the plot may be untrue, but it is true that Mozart excited a lot of jeaousy in his musical world, and was remarkably unguarded at times in his comments about others. In his letters there is evidence that Salieri was indeed a stirrer at times. But the film is a superb work of art, with wonderful music, fantasy, ribald humour, intrigue, visuals... it's a treasure, really is.

    The Original

    It was lovely to find the original film as opposed to the inferior Directors cut version, which seems to be the only option of buying this new.

    Lavish Production

    Really enjoyed this film, one I’d missed seeing at the time and recommended by a friend. Spectacular production with wonderful costumes, and incredible music, of course! A different slant on the Mozart story, which was interesting.
