This HBO documentary examines baseball's golden age from the Great Depression on through the late 1950s. Using archival footage and keen commentary, When It Was a Game shows many of baseball's greatest moments and monuments. From the first color filming of a baseball game to the 1938 World Series and on through the careers of Joe DiMagio and Mickey Mantle, this film is very thorough in scope. The game itself is not the only subject explored. In several cases, the documentary details how the sport held together a nation during WWII and how people viewed the game as America's sport.

Warning!
I was hoping to replace my 3 DVD set with this one disk Blu-Ray edition and not because I expected much video quality improvement because the source films used in the program are old. But what I didn't bargain for was a change in the format from the DVD 3 disk editions! The original show is in 4:3 format because of the material available in the old films. But someone in their infinite wisdom decided to reformat this into 16:9 widescreen!!! Ughhh There's only 2 ways to do that: the first being to horizontally 'stretch' the frame thereby severely distorting the picture (which should come with an automatic prison term) that we see all too often by amateurs who actually think they're converting to 'HD'. The other way (the way it's done here) is to crop off the top and the bottom of the frame then zoom up the remainder to 'widescreen'. So if you enjoy watching an incomplete (cropped) picture and fuzzed up video this is the version for you. Otherwise you want to stick with the DVD versions. So disappointed (and ticked off too).

Always wanted to own these
If you’re a baseball fan, and especially if you are also a history buff, you’ll love these films. Beautifully written with a memorable score. Watching these films still gives me goosebumps.

Cool color footage of early 20th Century Baseball
Cool color footage of early 20th Century Baseball. Inspired when it came out but is now overshadowed by other documentaries and footage found since. The first episodes are great, but buy the third the novelty wears out.
