Product Information

Barbara Stanwyck and Marilyn Monroe star in Fritz Lang's CLASH BY NIGHT, based on a play by Clifford Odets. Lang (M, METROPOLIS, THE BIG HEAT) stays true to form with this disturbing yet subtle portrait of the dangerous undercurrents of everyday life and the push and pull of greed and loyalty in modern relationships. The film begins with Mae Doyle (Stanwyck) returning to the safe haven of her hometown, a small fishing community in Monterey, California. Upon her arrival, she is befriended by a newly married young woman working in the canneries, played by Monroe. Mae also finds a friend in a kindhearted fisherman whom she quickly marries. But before too long Mae has thrown herself into a tumultuous affair with another man. In the second half of the movie, which takes place a year after the first, Mae willingly abandons her husband and child to pursue her affair. But she quickly learns that her new lover is a bitter, angry man. With him she's not the person that she used to be. She regrets her decision terribly and wishes that she could return to her husband--that is, if he could ever forgive her. Stanwyck's performance as a world-weary vamp is compellingly juxtaposed with Monroe's performance as a sassy, naive newlywed, as each character offsets the other's personal struggles. The storms that batter the coast of the gritty, realist locale mirror the storms that rage within each character as they search for the meanings of their lives.

  • Too great

Too great to review here. But I would say that taking Mae Doyle out of the 40's moral context, practically anyone would sympathize with her. Jerry is a nice guy but an infantile personality, at least outwardly. This would be great with some silly little thing, but Mae Doyle? But I know it still gives me a carnal thrill to see a woman do what women do best, submit. The fact that he will have her over & over blots out any initial difficulties. And I suppose a woman like Mae Doyle really needs to be bound by obligation. In fact, that is over all why she chose him, conventional matrimony.

  • Excellent acting & scenery

This was filmed on location in Monterey, California. The scenes of the actual Cannery Row are much better than anything created on a Hollywood sound stage. Every actor in this film plays his or her role to perfection. Even when you recognize that a certain character is weak, or immoral, or a bully, or an alcoholic, you can't help understanding and sympathizing with them too, because these are multi-faceted people, not one-dimensional stereotypes. Modern viewers may be appalled by the way the men push, grab, and threaten the women. The film portrays some men as good, and some bad, but all are physically and verbally rough with women. The women are only bothered by this when it is unwelcome attention from a man they don't love; they accept it, even welcome it, from boyfriends and husbands, who are otherwise perceived as weak. This film must be viewed in the context of the past when this was seen as normal male behavior, not abuse.

  • great old movie

i love old movies and this is a good one. Barbara Stanwyck plays a hard nosed female who thinks she needs to change her life, but then goes back to her old ways. its intriguing to see the way she plays it out. the cast including Robert Ryan are great. sound comes through well for such an old film. all in all, very enjoyable.
