Once again, Cain and Abel are at odds. No, these aren't the historical brothers whose story is chronicled in the Bible, but rather a couple of men who were subjected to mind enhancement technology while in-utero in the early years of the 21st century.<br><br>It seemed as if the experiment in human evolution was going to create new and better humans, capable of using all brain functions and power instead of a tiny fraction. The two men, products of the first successful, controlled experiment utilizing the Psionic Booster Serum (PBS) administered while they were in an unborn state, at first showed ill effects in the use and development of their psionic abilities as they matured.<br><br>The first adult experimental test subjects slowly and inexorably lost their sanity when the effects of using full brain functionality proved to be too much of an overload. Cain and Abel, injected as they were in infancy, still run the risk of insanity if they overextend the limits of their abilities and abuse their psionic powers.<br><br>The ability to expand human brain functionality came about after the discovery in 2028 of a mysterious artifact in the Middle East by Dr. Joan Aiken, a renowned genetic scientist. After failed early experimentation with serums that caused mind-blowing insanity, the theory of infant injection proved workable and augured well for the future of mankind's evolutionary track.<br><br>Unfortunately, the fears of the dissenters of the process proved all too valid -- certain elements of the population who received the PBS turned to a life of crime and used their psionic abilities for ill gains. To confront, control and counter the problem, the Department of National Psionic Control, or DNPC, was created. What better place to recruit agents than those early successes of the alteration?<br><br>So it was that Cain and Abel became the first agents of the new organization. At first, working together, the two men were extremely successful in battling the criminal element. Soon, though, Abel's interests centered on combat rather than helping control the problem and eventually suffered suspension from the DNPC and was locked up for exceeding his mandate.<br><br>Now, Abel has escaped and Cain, still the top field agent in DNPC, must track down his one-time partner and stop his crime spree. Meanwhile, Cain continues to fight for a peaceful coexistence between those with psionic abilities and "normal" society.<br><br>Sanity: Aiken's Artifact puts you in agent Cain's shoes and provides 21 unique single-player missions in which to battle the evils of criminals exploiting their psionic abilities for nefarious purposes. Not only must Cain fight those abusing the power but also has to control and maintain his own levels of use so as not to overextend and "go over the edge" himself.<br><br>To help in the war against the criminals, you have eight fighting styles known as Totems and 80 psionic weapons (Talents). The styles include elements based in fire, demonology, sun, death, storm, illusion, science and truth. Each has unique properties, strengths and weaknesses and special features.<br><br>The 80 Talents are collected, card-style, by Cain as he interacts with NPCs, whips enemies and bosses or discovers them through exploration in secret areas of some levels. All 80 initial weapons are available in the single-player missions but additional Talent Packs with new weapons can be obtained via Internet sources or retail outlets. Talents consist of various types that fall under the categories self, point, target, projectile, glyph, area, shield, blessing, curse and summon.<br><br>Not usable in the single-player missions, these booster packs are designed exclusively for use (and play-balanced by Monolith Productions) for multiplayer games.
