An interesting modeling subject BUT ...
This is SMER's most recent release (2006) of the classical Heller kit of the Potez 540. While not a well known aircraft during the war years it did have a role to play in both the Spanish Civil War & World War 2. Despite that only Heller has ever created the molds for a kit of this aircraft. Today the kit itself is quite long in the tooth, the molds for which having first been created in 1967, thus it bears traits one wouldn't typically see in a modern model kit. In terms of pros there is the obvious one that comes to mind which is that it is the ONLY Potez 540 model kit available on the market. It has been continually released since it's debut in 1967 by no less than seven different manufacturers & as a result it is quite common. It is reasonably close in shape & dimensions to the real ... Today the kit itself is quite long in the tooth, the molds for which having first been created in 1967, thus it bears traits one wouldn't typically see in a modern model kit. In terms of pros there is the obvious one that comes to mind which is that it is the ONLY Potez 540 model kit available on the market. It has been continually released since it's debut in 1967 by no less than seven different manufacturers & as a result it is quite common. It is reasonably close in shape & dimensions to the real aircraft so advanced modelers won't have to approach this kit with the resolve of a surgeon to fix this or that about it's general shape. This particular kit, as opposed to the old Heller releases, includes pre-war French Air Force decal markings as well as decal markings for an aircraft in the service of the Spanish Republican Air Force during the Spanish Civil War. This latter option is quite colorful for a warplane & as such will be a great conversation piece. That's about the end of the positive points regarding this model kit though. Few, if any, companies have produced more than canopy masks to accompany this kit therefore there are no easy ways to doctor it up into a more dynamic model. AZ Model produced additional parts in one of their releases to allow for the construction of unarmed wartime Potez 540s in the decal markings of the French Air Force, the Vichy French Air Force & Free French Air Force but that's it. Injection molds for model kits suffer wear & damage over time therefore the models that are popped out of them suffer as time passes as well. This kit is no different & as where the old Heller releases had very crisp lines these kits are now showing the age of the molds. There is a lot of flash (extra plastic that needs to be cut away) & some fit issues. Another issue is related to when the molds were manufactured. The industry has come a long way in the 48 years since this model was first marketed. It features raised panel lines which have long since been replaced with recessed panel lines. It lacks details for the engine cooling intakes & exhaust details which have become a particular area of focus for model manufacturers in recent years. (Many years for advanced modelers.) It has minimal interior detail to accompany it's thick semi-transparent clear parts which is so far removed from the norm in the modern industry. It has very generic looking, thick & soft edged propeller blades. The defensive machine-guns are laughable in detail though thankfully various aftermarket companies produce the MAC 1934 which can readily be used to replace those found in this model kit if you chose to do so. Details for the wheel wells are completely non-existent so you'll be doing a lot of research & scratch building if you want to display this model on a mirror. Last in regards to the kit details are the "starved dog" looking fabric covered wings. The wing ribs are badly exaggerated & will require considerable work to give it any semblance of realism. Last is pertaining to decisions the manufacturer of the molds for this kit, Heller, made during it's development. The fuselage for this aircraft type is very box-like which was typical for many aircraft of the era. These are perfectly represented with the standard two-half fuselage sections in any other similar aircraft kit. However for whatever reason Heller opted to mold the fuselage with five separate panels for the bottom, two for the top & both sides respectively. These parts are invariably warped to some degree & require a lot of care to get it to come together. Filling & sanding seams caused by this naturally removes raised detail all over the fuselage & wing-root. In summary although it is labeled for customers 8 years of age or older I really wouldn't recommend this kit to a young model builder. I would suggest an intermediate level builder, with at least a handful of model kits under their belt, just to assemble it as-is. To make this model kit a true showpiece would require an advanced builder, tens of hours of remedial work & scratch building. Regardless of the brand name on the box, at least as of this printing today (26/6/22,) it's the only kit of the Potez 540 out there. For all of my criticism I'm grateful that this kit is available at all as it's a pretty obscure aircraft. I wouldn't object to a seeing a new & modern kit produced to fill the role of this one on the market but at the same time it serves as a lovely base to showcase your skills as a model builder to turn it into a fine display piece that will turn heads.

Great kit with great history
A great old Heller kit, re-issued by Smer, and still the only model of this particular aircraft around. For its day, the kit is very detailed and also very accurate in outline and appearance. Definitely one to have on the shelf, especially in view of its service in the Spanish Civil War with Andre Malraux and his famous 'international squadron'.

Very nice kit, depicts one of the French Air Force bombers from before the war came to France. Not overly detailed easy and fun to build. If you like the tween the wars aircraft with lots of windows this is for you.
