A Hula Heroine
Maiki Aiu Lake was a very important person in the world of hula. I got this DVD because of my recent interest in hula especially as relates to Hawaiian culture. This documentary presents the comments of those who knew her well, students and relatives, as well as her own comments on her efforts to bring hula to a wider audience and more students. By all accounts, Maiki was a very special person, who was able to make others feel loved and special themselves. She was also a great dancer and teacher, who was dedicated and generous in sharing her knowledge. After watching this video, I felt like I knew Maiki. At times she was criticized, unjustly in my opinion, for her very willingness to bring hula to a wider group rather than keep it for a small "in-group." Another wonderful thing about this DVD is the scenes of Hawaiian hula dancing, both traditional and modern style.
