Product Information

In the midst of World War II, as the tide turns against the Axis, a German U-boat crew is sent out to patrol the Atlantic and fire at Allied ships bringing supplies to England. The submarine also carries a press correspondent, there to report from the front lines of nautical warfare. Meanwhile, the crew's captain (Jürgen Prochnow) is becoming disillusioned with the Nazi regime and with war in general. What starts out as a routine mission is soon livened up beyond the crew's expectations when their boat's surprise attack on a convoy is thwarted by a fast-moving destroyer. Battered by depth charges, the crew must pull together to survive the attacks of their unseen enemy.Widely considered to be director Wolfgang Petersen's best film and one of the finest German films ever made, DAS BOOT is stunningly realistic in its portrayal of the cramped conditions aboard a German submarine. Based on a novel by Lothar G. Buchheim, it is a striking example of an intelligent antiwar film clothed in the guise of a military thriller.

The DVD was as described and I am satisfied with the quality of the copy I got. The package was a bit used but the DVD inside was in perfect condition. The seller was great at communicating with me and letting me know when the product was shipped and the tracking information was good. The movie itself reflects the very mixed reviews it got. The main actor was not a professional actor, but someone who applied to work on the movie set, but ended up being selected by the director.

A Monumental Picture in Movie History
None of the American made war movies ever made before 1985 can hold a candle in quality to this epic. The tension, claustrophobia and psychological drama of these sea wolves unfolds with stark realism in sharp focus. These are not the idealised characters of most navy going movies with all sailors well scrubbed, shaved, manicured, smelling good and looking like they just left home. On the contrary, the men in Das Boot's German U-boat wear the war on their faces, salt in their beards, oscillating between the adrenaline rush of the hunt for ships they torpedo, to sinking to the bottom of the ocean, with depth charges exploding all around them and the enemy on the surface waiting to kill them. Amazed To See , Director's Cut for a timeless classic!
I was amazed to see a director's cut had been prepared for this timeless film from Wolfgang Peterson. Over the years he has been known for good films, some international and some not. This film gets at the confinement suffered by a crew on a submarine, but also how things quickly turn about which frequently happens in war.

Original soundtrack is German language, but we had English subtitles, making it easy to follow the movie. Amazing reality inside a German submarine in the 1940's; won multiple awards. Very interesting.

The Best War Book of them All.
I had watched two versions of the movie Das Boot and enjoyed them very much. BUT I was totally unprepared for the book. It is 500+ pages of captivating detail of submarine life and war drama. When I was done with the book, I offered it to my wife to read. She reads a great deal, but has no special interest in mechanical detail or war, but she was captivated by Das Boot.
