This sterling adaptation of Austen's third published novel, set in early 19th century Portsmouth, England, concerns Fanny Price (O'Connor), an intelligent young woman who is sent to live with her mother's wealthy family. Settling into her new life, Fanny is treated poorly by everyone except her cousin Edmund (Miller). The pair connect immediately, and pretty soon deeper feelings emerge. Not mildly close to the book. Many bad liberties taken.
Fanny, who is supposed to by shy in the book, is a vivacious gal who loves to write stories. This movie throws in an entire section on slavery (screaming from the ships as Fanny drives off to Mansfield), including Fanny discovering a book of Tom's drawings featuring slave mutilation and sexual abuse in graphic detail. (Committed by Mr. Bertram and Tom in Antigua!) Mr. Bertram is an upstanding gentleman who, as far as Jane Austin is concerned, doesn't chop, hang and fornicate with slaves. Fanny also walks in on Maria and Henry while they are in flagrante in the room next door to where Tom is recovering. Later, Mary actually says the content of her private letter to Fanny concerning how to reintegrate Maria into society in front of the entire family! Yes, she suggests in front of the father and mother that it would be great if Tom died so that Edmund could be rich and they could give parties and dinners. Amazing. Furthermore, the brother William is entirely left out of the movie. In Portsmouth, Fanny actually accepts Henry's proposal, and then changes her mind the next day. The whole point of Fanny is her constancy and strong morals. She would NEVER do that. Fortunately, you can by a very good version from WGBH Boston, starring Billie Piper and Blake Ritson. Some of my favorite actors are in this film, including a young Hugh Bonneville as Mr. Rushworth, and I had really been looking forward to it. Not as good as I expected...
I read Mansfield Park before watching this movie. The book, being fairly slow and less entertaining than Austen's other books, I wasn't expecting the movie to be as loveable as Emma or beautiful as Pride and Prejudice. However, the way this movie was done... Well, Mansfield Park itself looked far grand than I imagined it would, the characters were... so-so... I didn't like how they changed bits and pieces of the script, such as how Fanny accepted Henry's proposal, and then how she changed her mind the next day. I didn't like that Fanny's brother was left out of the movie, and that, although Fanny brought her sister with her, it was very discreet, and viewers probably wouldn't have even understood if they hadn't read the novel. Then there was this random scene in which Fanny finds a notebook of her cousin Tom's, and she pages through it finding disgusting grotesque drawings of people and creatures. This scene was not in the book at all. It was not even hinted, and it added absolutely nothing to the movie. I don't think Tom even had a sentence in the movie after this scene, and I still don't understand why on earth it was added in the first place. Finally, the way the movie ended was... better than the book, I suppose since the book ended so abruptly. However, the ending was still found wanting, and I wished they had done a better job at it. Time passing and Fanny getting married was barely even alluded to, and the only way you figured out this had occurred was that she was heading towards her new cottage with her husband... Definitely not the best of Austen's novels, and certainly not the best of her film adaptions. We were disappointed.Bestätigter Kauf: JaArtikelzustand: Neu

My Favorite Jane Austen story.
Fanny Price is my favorite Jane Austen character. Frances O'Connor plays her perfectly. Fanny had little to offer as a wife, she had little social standing and no real family name. She sticks to her ideals and refuses to marry out of convenience and waits for true love. A wonderful movie, beautiful sets and costumes, great cast.Bestätigter Kauf: JaArtikelzustand: Neu

Missed this movie when last sick
