Le sculture del vestibolo di Sant'Ambrogio a Milano costituiscono un insieme omogeneo e compatto, che si distingue nettamente all'interno dell'ampia decorazione plastica della basilica. Attraverso l'individuazione degli elementi originali e l'analisi dettagliata di tutte le immagini scolpite, lo studio ricostruisce il significato complessivo del programma iconografico, dando ampio rilievo al valore simbolico del contesto architettonico e alle sue finalità liturgiche. Nel quadro della simbologia medievale che vede nell'edificio della chiesa un'immagine presente e visibile della Ecclesia caelestis, lo spazio occidentale che precede la chiesa vera e propria riveste un ruolo fondamentale: esso segna il confine tra sacro e profano ed è legato a doppio filo ai concetti antitetici di salvezza e accoglienza da una parte, d'interdizione ed esclusione dall'altra.
