Synopsis
Flora of North America , Volume 3, provides information on many of the most familiar wildflowers and trees in North America. Included are treatments of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae), with such plants as delphiniums and columbines, and the poppy family (Papveraceae). Most of the important broadleaf tree species are covered, including the oaks (Fagaceae), elms (Ulmaceae), birches (Betulaceae), walnuts (Juglandaceae), plane trees (Platanaceae), and magnolias (Magnoliaceae). Many striking families are covered, such as the dutchman's pipe family (Aristolochiaceae), and the aquatic families Nymphaeaceae (water lilies), and Nelumbonaceae (lotus). As with Volume 2, this unique reference provides identification keys, summaries of habitats and geographic ranges, distribution maps, pertinent synonymies, descriptions, chromosome numbers, phenological information, and other significant biological observations for each species. The treatments--written and reviewed by experts throughout the systematic botanical community--are based on original observations of herbarium specimens and, whenever possible, on living plants. These observations are supplemented by critical reviews of the literature. For anyone interested in the definitive account of North American plant life, this newest volume in the long-awaited Flora will be valued as an indispensable acquisition., Flora of North America, Volume 3, provides information on many of the most familiar wildflowers and trees in North America. Item shipped very quickly! Everything was as described and a great addition to my collection. Packaging was great, pastels are soft so a little more might have prevented some lead breakage but overall I'm more than happy and would definitely buy from this seller again! They gave me a great deal.

  • One volume of a superb highly-detailed 30-volume technical Flora

I bought this volume particularly for its treatment of North American elms, as I'm writing a book on elms in Britain, and some American species are planted here. It's a very well written technical handbook, with very useful line drawings, and detailed identification keys. The style is more readable than most equivalent Floras, such as Flora Europaea. The main drawbacks if you needed the full set would be size and price: over 30 volumes so far (and still continuing) and new price is £62 per volume, perhaps £1800 for the full set, and each 4cm thick, so needing 1.2m of shelf space. For my purposes, this inexpensive volume on Ebay was ideal.
