Synopsis
This book chronicles the unforgettable account of one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history. It is the story of Dave Pelzer, who was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother: a mother who played tortuous, unpredictable games--games that left him nearly dead. He had to learn how to play his mother's games in order to survive because she no longer considered him a son, but a slave; and no longer a boy, but an "it." Dave's bed was an old army cot in the basement, and his clothes were torn and raunchy. When his mother allowed him the luxury of food, it was nothing more than spoiled scraps that even the dogs refused to eat. The outside world knew nothing of his living nightmare. He had nothing or no one to turn to, but his dreams kept him alive--dreams of someone taking care of him, loving him and calling him their son., This book chronicles the unforgettable account of one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history. • Never Give Up!

A Child Called It is a heart wrenching tale of one child's survival in the cruelest world imagined. I used this book in my sophomore high school class. The author talked at length to one of my students when I let her call him as the whole class listened. He talked to her a number of times. She was pretty much homeless and he encouraged her.

  • Best 💕

This book is my favorite I cry every time I read it. I haven't read the other two yet but they on my list to order next ☺️ and what made it even better is it arrived 6 days early best book to read but be prepared to have a broken heart and anger and relief! No child should ever go through what this poor baby did I have five boys three of my own and two stepsons and i would never imagine my kids going through this babies pain!! Can't wait to read the other two!

  • I could not, would not put it down!

I had never read an entire book in one day until I received this book. I could not put the book down, which is brilliantly written by the child that underwent horrible abuse at the hands of his own mother. If I had not read the first chapter titled The Rescue, I don't think I could have continued reading what this child endured. It is a story of a child's will to overcome his circumstances, and his will to survive. Many incidents are difficult to read but you will continue to see how David gets through it all. There are two sequels documenting David's life after the end of this book. I cannot wait to read them both, to cheer on his spirit and courage.

  • Awesome book

This book is incredible. The story is awesome. I read it when I was a teenager and just had to read it again. I look forward to reading the other two books in the series because those I have not read yet. The price of this book was a steal, so cheap but the quality is like new.
