"A triumph of spare writing . . . A gem of a story, set in rough times, in a tough terrain, and tenderly told." - Bob Minzesheimer, USA Today "Pure, clean American simplicity in prose that is easy to mimic and hard to make . . . The visionary, miraculous element in Johnson's deceptively tough realism makes beautiful appearances in this book. The hard declarative sentences keep their powder dry for pages at a time, and then suddenly flare up into lyricism; the natural world of the American West is examined, logged, and frequently transfigured." - James Wood, The New Yorker, "A triumph of spare writing . . . Synopsis
A New York Times Notable Book An Esquire Best Book of 2011 A New Yorker Favorite Book of 2011 A Los Angeles Times Favorite Book of 2011 Denis Johnson's Train Dreams is an epic in miniature, one of his most evocative and poignant fictions. It is the story of Robert Grainier, a day laborer in the American West at the start of the twentieth century---an ordinary man in extraordinary times. Buffeted by the loss of his family, Grainer struggles to make sense of this strange new world. As his story unfolds, we witness both his shocking personal defeats and the radical changes that transform America in his lifetime. Suffused with the history and landscapes of the American West, this novella by the National Book Award--winning author of Tree of Smoke captures the disappearance of a distinctly American way of life., A New York Times Notable Book for 2011 One of The Economist 's 2011 Books of the Year One of NPR's 10 Best Novels of 2011 From the National Book Award-winning author Denis Johnson ( Tree of Smoke ) comes Train Dreams , an epic in miniature, and one of Johnson's most evocative works of fiction. Suffused with the history and landscapes of the American West--its otherworldly flora and fauna, its rugged loggers and bridge builders--this extraordinary novella poignantly captures the disappearance of a distinctly American way of life. It tells the story of Robert Grainer, a day laborer in the American West at the start of the twentieth century--an ordinary man in extraordinary times. Buffeted by the loss of his family, Grainer struggles to make sense of this strange new world. - e***n (391)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufGreat transaction, exactly as described, packed well, and promptly shipped on August 6th. Unfortunately the U.S. Postal Service took 23 calendar days to deliver the book. It was shipped from Pennsylvania, to Atlanta, past Alabama to Texas, enjoyed several days in Texas, then to Minneapolis, Jacksonville, Florida, back to Atlanta, finally to Birmingham, and Huntsville. The seller was very responsive and I decided it was interesting to see if/how the book would arrive. Thanks, Joe
- 0***g (380)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzter MonatBestätigter KaufExcellent purchase. Was able to get all three items from the one seller. Seller was able to bundle all three items together into one package. Items as described and arrived in perfect condition. Good communication around shipping and tracking as items delayed and not able to be delivered by original estimate. Thanks to shipping updates I was able to track the items arriving before the extended delivery time. Thank you for making these items available on EBay.
