Missing babies, maternal sacrifice, and secrets, secrets, secrets--Morton offers generous clues, only to peel back deeper layers just when the truth seems close.....not short on heart-wrenching choices and rich characters ., A rich and almost magical good old-fashioned tale...a fabulous addition to her work...whisks the reader away into another world...The Lake House is the perfect read for cold, dark nights., Skillful, suspenseful, surprising...a perfect read for ...dark winter evenings...Morton is a master of suspense., Compelling...Morton's plotting is impeccable, and her finely wrought characters...are as surprised as readers will be by the astonishing conclusion., ..a stunning, well-woven mystery that will keep readers hooked through myriad twists and turns. There are secrets within secrets in this story, and every time readers think they've figured it out, something new will be revealed., The stories, brilliantly told by Morton, offer musings on art, betrayal, and the ways in which real lives and real places can evolve over time into the stuff of legends., [Morton's] most ambitious work yet...Morton proves once again that history is not a straight line but an intricate, infinite web.
Synopsis
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "An ambitious, compelling historical mystery with a fabulous cast of characters...Kate Morton at her very best." --Kristin Hannah " An elaborate tapestry...Morton doesn't disappoint ." -- The Washington Post " Classic English country-house Goth at its finest ." -- New York Post In the depths of a 19th-century winter, a little girl is abandoned on the streets of Victorian London. She grows up to become in turn a thief, an artist's muse, and a lover. In the summer of 1862, shortly after her eighteenth birthday, she travels with a group of artists to a beautiful house on a bend of the Upper Thames. Tensions simmer and one hot afternoon a gunshot rings out. A woman is killed, another disappears, and the truth of what happened slips through the cracks of time. It is not until over a century later, when another young woman is drawn to Birchwood Manor, that its secrets are finally revealed. Told by multiple voices across time, this is an intricately layered, richly atmospheric novel about art and passion, forgiveness and loss, that shows us that sometimes the way forward is through the past., INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "An ambitious, compelling historical mystery with a fabulous cast of characters...Kate Morton at her very best." --Kristin Hannah " An elaborate tapestry...Morton doesn't disappoint ." -- The Washington Post Classic English country-house Goth at its finest . -- New York Post In the depths of a 19th-century winter, a little girl is abandoned on the streets of Victorian London. Quick shipment by the seller, along with some strong packaging (items were in perfect condition despite the box taking a beating). Item was perfectly described. Would highly recommend working with this eBay user as their communication was quick, and were willing to help out when the shipment took a little longer than expected (due to USPS, not the seller.) Would purchase from again, 10/10 experience. A+++ transaction!

  • Great for mystery lovers

Kate Morton is one of my favorite authors. She has the ability to draw you in and not let go until you have finished the book.

  • history with a touch of mystery.

Her books are the kind you will read again and share with neighbors to get them hooked on reading her other books. I have them all, so far and always look forward to a new one when it comes out!

  • A really good read.

My daughter recommended Kate Morton. This book is her favorite of the five books Ms Morton has written. I'm really enjoying reading it. It's difficut getting out of my own mind these days, never mind getting out of the house. Clovid-19 is pervasive. The Clockworker's Daughter has me spending more time on the deck reading. The story is a captivating respite from what's going on in the world.

  • Wonderful

If you are a fan of history or historical fiction this is for you. Lovely book following a home and the people who inhabit it through time.

  • Appealing Title - But Disappointing Plot, Flow, Character Development

Slugging through this book and I really don't care what happens to the characters on page 255. Do I continue for another 240 pages or quit now?
