Der Einband weist nur sehr geringfügige Beschädigungen auf, wie z.B. kleinere Schrammen, er hat aber weder Löcher, noch ist er eingerissen. The well-known science writer George Johnson fashions a fascinating picture of Miss Leavitt's life...His grace in bringing her to life is matched by his lucidity in explaining difficult scientific concepts., Illuminating....This book...honors the memory of the lowly observatory assistant--no, make that astronomer--who taught us how to get from here to the farthest there there is., Johnson paints a luminous portrait of Leavitt and shows how her patient work sparked an explosion of astronomical creativity., Illuminating. . . . Synopsis
George Johnson brings to life Henrietta Swan Leavitt, who found the key to the vastness of the universe--in the form of a "yardstick" suitable for measuring it. Unknown in our day, Leavitt was no more recognized in her own: despite her enormous achievement, she was employed by the Harvard Observatory as a mere number-cruncher, at a wage not dissimilar from that of workers in the nearby textile mills. Miss Leavitt's Stars uncovers her neglected history., "A short, excellent account of [Leavitt's] extraordinary life and achievements." --Simon Singh, New York Times Book Review, George Johnson brings to life Henrietta Swan Leavitt, who found the key to the vastness of the universe-in the form of a "yardstick" suitable for measuring it. Unknown in our day, Leavitt was no more recognized in her own: despite her enormous achievement, she was employed by the Harvard Observatory as a mere number-cruncher, at a wage not dissimilar from that of workers in the nearby textile mills. Miss Leavitt's Stars uncovers her neglected history., A forgotten heroine of science and how she solved one of the crucial mysteries of the universe. "A short, excellent account of [Leavitt's] extraordinary life and achievements."--Simon Singh, "New York Times Book Review" How big is the universe? In the early twentieth century, scientists took sides. One held that the entire universe was contained in the Milky Way galaxy. Their champion was the strong-willed astronomer Harlow Shapley. Another camp believed that the universe was so vast that the Milky Way was just one galaxy among billions--the view that would prevail, proven by the equally headstrong Edwin Hubble. Almost forgotten is the Harvard Observatory "computer"--a human number cruncher hired to calculate the positions and luminosities of stars in astronomical photographs--who found the key to the mystery. Radcliffe-educated Henrietta Swan Leavitt, fighting ill health and progressive deafness, stumbled upon a new law that allowed astronomers to use variable stars--those whose brightness rhythmically changes--as a cosmic yardstick. "Miss Leavitt's Stars" is both a masterly account of how we measure the universe and the moving story of a neglected genius. 10 illustrations.

- e***g (59)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufExcellent prices on used books in great condition. Shipped out quickly. Product condition is accurate to rating in listing. Thanks! NOTE: For this particular book (I ordered several), it came in a soft cover rather than hard cover as the listing stated. I contacted the seller and they responded promptly. They agreed that it was a listing error and provided me with a full refund for this book (without return required) proving they are both a responsible and trustworthy seller. The Game Hardcover Ken Dryden (Nr. 277097212658)
- 0***1 (1570)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzter MonatBestätigter KaufThis book arrived within the time period given and was in the 'very good' condition described. Unfortunately, only being packaged in a plastic bag to traverse the Atlantic meant that all four corners got a battering (I would be happy to pay bit more in future for a bit of cardboard support in packaging) but all in all, the price was good and overall service for books that are difficult to get over here, I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend this seller. Will buy again from them.
