SynopsisDrawing from documents and eyewitness reports, an exploration of the Einsatzgruppen-''special task forces''-organized by Heinrich Himmler to follow the German army as it advanced into eastern Poland and Russia, murdering 1.5 million Jews between 1941 and 1943., In Masters of Death, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Rhodes gives full weight, for the first time, to the Einsatzgruppen's role in the Holocaust. These "special task forces," organized by Heinrich Himmler to follow the German army as it advanced into eastern Poland and Russia, were the agents of the first phase of the Final Solution. They murdered more than 1.5 million men, women, and children between 1941 and 1943, often by shooting them into killing pits, as at Babi Yar. These massive crimes have been generally overlooked or underestimated by Holocaust historians, who have focused on the gas chambers. In this painstaking account, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Rhodes profiles the eastern campaign's architects as well as its "ordinary" soldiers and policemen, and helps us understand how such men were conditioned to carry out mass murder. Marshaling a vast array of documents and the testimony of perpetrators and survivors, this book is an essential contribution to our understanding of the Holocaust and World War II.

  • Very compelling!

After watching a documentary on the History Channel, I was very impressed by what the author had to say, and immediately ordered this book. At first I was a little wary due to the small print and thought it was going to be a very tedious read. I am a slow reader, and at the rate of approximately 1 chapter per night, it's going to take months to finish this book. That being said, I was immediately impressed with the author's style, knowledge, and in depth information about this most dark period in history. It's hard to take it all in, but the author is not too wordy, giving just the right amount of information, and putting it in context of the times. There are excellent critiques of other books on the topic, and he lays out his thinking in a very logical and easy to follow manner. The book has a lot of photos, too. I am "enjoying" this book as much as any book on this subject can be enjoyed. I also bought his book on the making of the A-Bomb, and am looking forward to reading that as well. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in history and the evil that men do. All pros, no cons.

  • Far too detailed and quite boring.

I think we all like facts and figures about Wars but this book takes it into the extreme. Page after page talks about so many Jews killed in this location. So many Jews killed in that location. Next chapter...so many Jews killed in this village, so many Jews killed in that village. Next chapter...hundreds of Jews shot in this spot, hundreds more in that spot. It just goes on and on. After a while the book just became stale and boring like I was reading someones tax information returns. There is some good interviews which is about the only redeeming quality of this book. Probably a better title for the book would be, "Summary of executions committed by the German War Machine during World War 2".

  • Nazi era non-fiction book

This is the only book I've discovered during my research into the horrific murders during the Nazi era of Germany. Other books leave out the details. But this book describes the methodologies and deceptions used to round up people for the purpose of killing them. I was amazed at the cold hearted efficiency of these mass killings.

  • A dark time in history

This book isn't for everyone but it is a dark part of war and history. It needs to be told.
