Part of an eight-volume set, these two titles provide basic information on two significant figures from the Renaissance era. Elizabeth I describes the political wrangling behind the English Crown set against the backdrop of the power struggle between the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church. Elizabeth's mother is executed by her father, her sister Mary then has her imprisoned in the Tower of London, and then Elizabeth herself orders the execution of her own cousin, Mary Queen of Scots. This concise biography has it all; imprisonment, banishment, war, espionage, assassination, the plague, and beheading are all part of the story of the virgin queen's remarkable life. One hundred and thirty-five years earlier, Johannes Gutenberg was born into a more ordinary life as the son of a patrician in Mainz, Germany. Gutenberg's training as a metallurgist prepared him for his later work as inventor of the printing press. Readers will learn that more was involved than just the press, and that it took many experiments to come up with a type of paper and ink that would work with the press. These were tumultuous times in Europe, and while Gutenberg is recognized as the inventor of the printing press, he was unable to profit from it and was forced to turn his press over to his financial partners who then built a successful business. Upper elementary, middle, and high school students will find these attractive and easy-to-read volumes quite useful for reports. There are pictures, quotes, primary source documnets, maps, or sidebars containing relevant facts on nearly every page as well as a glossary and a time line with both world events and events from the subject's life. The "Life at a Glance" page provides just the barest facts, and the print resources listed on the "Additional Resources" page should provide more in-depth information. Using the FactHound Web site for more information by typing in the ID number for these books did not lead to any more information on Elizabeth I and for Gutenberg provided only a mere paragraph of basic information. Historic sites are also listed here. Other books in the series profiel Christopher Columbus, Nicolaus Copernicus, Galileo, Michelangelo, Francisco Pizarro, and William Shakespeare. These books provide an excellent overview of key historic figures from the Renaissance.
