Ai primordi di Sparta e di Roma, al tempo in cui la storia ancora sfuma nel mito, si stagliano due figure immense e semidivine: Licurgo, il legislatore che con la sua riforma dell'ordinamento politico e dei costumi sociali ha plasmato la struttura ferrea dello Stato spartano e ha posto le basi per un'egemonia plurisecolare; e Numa, il pio successore di Romolo e secondo una leggenda discepolo di Pitagora, che ha delineato le principali istituzioni religiose di Roma e, con le sue iniziative in ambito civile, ha fatto dono alla città di uno dei suoi rari periodi di pace. Nel confronto tra queste due "Vite", Plutarco sottolinea come, pur nelle differenze dovute alla diversa composizione dei rispettivi Stati, entrambi i legislatori abbiano agito in vista del medesimo obiettivo: la saggia temperanza del popolo. Il testo è corredato di un ricco commento e una bibliografia aggiornata ai più recenti studi plutarchei. Con un saggio di Philip A. Stadter.
