    The book was exactly as described and arrived quickly. The only problem is a recurring one with this seller and other similar sellers - the book is poorly packaged in a plastic envelope and gets heavily bumped in shipping. I would like to see the books wrapped before shipment, but I understand this can't be done for cost reason. Luckily it isn't an expensive book, and I will continue to purchase basic books from this seller. A+++++

    How Government Really Works

    This is a brutally long book (over a million words long), otherwise I would give it 5 stars. I wish a condensed version would be made, and it should be required reading for every American so they understand how politics and elected officials really work (hint: they don't work for you, and they aren't public servants). Even though this book is now over 40 years old, it is has never been more applicable to the present day. “I think about Robert Caro and reading ‘The Power Broker’ back when I was 22 years old, and just being mesmerized, and I’m sure it helped to shape how I think about politics.” - Barack Obama

    First book by America's greatest historian

    Before there was the multivolume biography of Lyndon Johnson, Robert Caro wrote The Power Broker. If you want to know why American cities look the way they do, or just read a thrilling bio, this is the book. Behind his avility as a historian, Caro is simply America's best nonfiction writer. Ever.

    The good, the bad and the ugly

    Robert Moses was all three, often at the same time. The Power Broker is sometimes considered an exposé, but Caro is more than fair, gives credit to Moses for cutting through red tape, seeing public projects through that could never have been accomplished otherwise. I wish city planners today would build parks instead of allowing still more shopping centers to swallow up vacant land. The book is nothing if not scholarly and serious, but there is humor scattered here and there. Moses gets the last word, "Why weren't they grateful?" Incidentally I'm not sure Caro's world class writing is fully appreciated. If he had chosen a career as a novelist he would probably have rivaled O'Brian and Updike, and as they stand his books are packed with wonderfully turned (not clever) phraseology, ...

    The title sums up the book perfectly.

    I can't imagine a better written and researched history of Robert Moses (about whom I knew nothing) and New York -- City and State. This 1300+ page authoritative masterpiece (which won a Pulitzer) has got to be the "last word" on this subject. There's a lot packed in there, so the reading is slow, but the information is compelling, including back stories on many of the persons involved. Highly recommended!

    A long read but worth the time.

    This is an extremely well-researched and written account of the activities of some of the most prominent people in the US during the last century. There is much interesting history here and compelling accounts of the uses and abuses of political power during that time.
