Thought I was out of luck, when I finally got the disc out after slapping the mac mini around a bit I noticed that the disc had been altered and had either anti-theft or other added features glued on to the top! It was a music cd borrowed from local library. Decided to carefully check discs before loading them into drive, it is particularly narrow, narrower that the superdrive replaced.

Only issue is with the shipping: Seller shipped the bare DVD drive mechanism in a padded envelope with no reinforcing or additional protection. Drive did arrive with a slight edge dent at the ATA connector but it straightened out (with hand pressure!) and did not affect the mechanism. Absurd packaging for a delicate mechanism with a thin metal housing! Positive feedback only because it ended well.
