Challenging film but worth every minute of concentration to follow it.
First, I enjoyed the movie but was deeply moved by the multitude of tragedies that it portrayed. The ultimate conclusion wasn't really revealed to me until I read many comments by viewers on the Internet Movie Data Base. The last of those described a conclusion that totally escaped me on the initial viewing, but made better sense than the obvious one. I don't want to give it away with less import than the writer gave it, so I recommend logging on to IMDB and reading the comments for yourselves. With the elegant little violin singing throughout, as unimportant as it may seem, it charms - and soon its story takes you through times, countries, politics, and more - with adventure, mystery, money, romance, passion, music and art and a powerful storyline. The production is top quality - super rich colors and perfect set and costume design - great camera work! I will not give away its secrets - that would ruin it for you! I bought it here on DVD for my player and at iTunes in digital format for happy enjoyment on all my devices - at home or remotely. Happy customer! Incredibly woven tapestries of an elegant story.
I believe the film flew under the radar when first released. It is an underrated example of a journey, not by the protagonist or antagonist per se, but the object of interest and central prop/object around which the story unfolds. Beautifully photographed and expertly designed to cover the centuries of the story's progression, it is a remarkable film that is begins as a mystery and keeps the viewer in amazement. As the litany of characters weave a story of passions, greed and enchantment in a story at its most nuanced, we are intrigued and entertained by the story, the characters and the journey....I believe the film flew under the radar when first released.
